  • This Crystal of Atlan mechanic needs to be addressed ASAP

This Crystal of Atlan mechanic needs to be addressed ASAP

Image via Nuverse / Remix by The Escapist

No, you can’t fix this by swiping.

Crystal of Atlan, the new free-to-play MMORPG by Nuverse, has only been out for one day, and yet the only topic players seem to be talking about is how much they hate the Energy / Stamina System. This system, while common in other free-to-play games, is forcing players to stop playing early, and there doesn’t seem to be a way to remedy this, not even if you swipe your Credit Card.

Crystal of Atlan utilizes an Energy System, similar to those found in many free-to-play games, especially Facebook games, where each activity consumes a certain amount of Stamina. Once the Energy runs out, the players are forced to stop playing the game.

You’re probably thinking that the game has a way to refill this annoying mechanic through items, and you’d be correct… kind of. Players can get Batteries, which, as the name suggests, replenish their Character Energy. There are three types of Batteries currently in the game, and each of them refills a different amount. Here’s the best part: You can’t buy these Batteries with real money. Players can get a few of them from non-premium loot crates and maybe one more from different exchanges, but even those who spend a lot of money won’t be able to avoid this roadblock.

Have you tried Crystal of Atlan? Check out our Ultimate Crystal of Atlan Class Tier list if you need help picking your first class.

Players on the official Crystal of Atlan Discord and Reddit have been extremely vocal about their feelings regarding the system. Some are posting memes about how ridiculous the Energy System is, while others are even saying how this will ultimately kill the game. Some are even saying they can run out of juice in under 10 minutes of playing the game.

You can only buy Batteries very late in the game. Screenshot by The Escapist

Upon creating their first character, players have only 120 Character Energy and 70 Account Energy. That may sound like a lot, but each story mission in the game takes 5 Energy, and late-game activities take even more. The Character Energy replenishes daily, but the same can’t be said for the Account one. Once players make it to the endgame, they can unlock another Energy pool for the entire account, but that’s only if they are willing to put up with this entire system in the first place, which is literally preventing them from playing.

We really like Crystal of Atlan, and we’d like to see it thrive, but if the Energy mechanic isn’t addressed, players will become frustrated and find a new game.

  • AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D reportedly won’t get cooked by ASRock motherboards any more

AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D reportedly won’t get cooked by ASRock motherboards any more

It looks like ASRock has finally figured out why AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D gaming CPUs keep burning out on its motherboards. While the company hasn’t made an official statement, ASRock engineers reportedly discussed the cause, off the record, at the Computex 2025 trade show last week, with the issue now reportedly fixed with a new set of BIOS updates.

Reports of burned-out AMD Ryzen gaming CPUs have been racking up on Reddit for months, but the cause hasn’t been completely clear, leaving owners of the best gaming CPU at risk when using ASRock motherboards. ASRock initially sought to downplay the situation in public, but it looks like the problem was more problematic than the company initially realised.

    YouTube Thumbnail

ASRock engineers, speaking off the record, spoke to YouTuber Tech Yes City at Computex 2025 about the motherboard issues. The YouTube channel reports that the issue with ASRock motherboards and recent AMD Ryzen CPUs burning out is due to the current supplied to the CPU using AMD’s Precision Boost Override (PBO), a feature used by Ryzen CPUs that automatically adjusts your voltage and clock speed limits for best performance.

According to the engineers, power settings for AMD Ryzen 9000 series CPUs on these motherboards were “too aggressive” for the CPUs to handle. However, the engineers also say that the issue has been resolved with the latest updates rolled out for mid-tier and high-end motherboards, while lower-end boards shouldn’t have been affected at all.

ASRock has reportedly been able to adjust hidden voltage settings, named “shadow voltages” by the engineers, in the BIOS for Ryzen CPUs that the company was previously unable to modify. The electric design current and thermal design current limits for PBO, which were previously too aggressive, have also been apparently modified to meet AMD’s design specifications for these newest CPUs.

While this is good news on the whole, it does leave some unanswered questions, not least about what will happen for owners of CPUs that may have been damaged before the fix was issued. Neither ASRock nor AMD has confirmed this information independently, so we’ll be hoping that these recent BIOS updates really have resolved the issue for those gamers with so-far unaffected systems.

There’s also a strong possibility that gamers may have been affected without even realizing the setting was active. According to tech journalist Dr Ian Cutress in a recent X post, simply installing certain versions of the AMD Ryzen Master overclocking software on systems with ASRock motherboards would enable PBO, even if it wasn’t being reported in the software or in the BIOS itself. The only fix for that problem would be to enable the setting manually, then disable it again, to stop it from working.

If you’re using an AMD Ryzen 9000-series CPU on an ASRock motherboard, we recommend updating to the latest available BIOS release as soon as possible – you can check out the latest release for your board via the ASRock website, which lists recent updates with “Optimize PBO settings” as an update item. If you’ve never performed a BIOS flash before, check out our guide on how to update a BIOS first.

If you’ve been using AMD Ryzen Master, you should also make sure the software is up-to-date and follow the steps to manually enable, then disable PBO if you don’t want the feature to be active.

You should also keep a copy of your warranty and purchase details to make sure that, in the event of a failure, you can request a repair or refund.

Thinking about a CPU upgrade? Check out our AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D review next to see why this eight-core powerhouse is still the best for gaming, thanks to its 3D V-cache technology. Our how to install a CPU guide also explains how to replace your processor without any fuss.

  • Valheim publisher launches deckbuilder and strategy game hybrid As We Descend

Valheim publisher launches deckbuilder and strategy game hybrid As We Descend

It’s a bit surprising that we haven’t seen more projects that put together two genres as massively popular as deckbuilders and strategy games. The former style of design has given us everything from Monster Train 2 to Slay the Spire while the latter includes Against the Storm, Total War: Pharaoh, Age of Empires 4, and so much more. As We Descend takes notes from both types of game, blending them into something new that you can now check out for yourself with its Early Access launch on Steam today.

As We Descend has been on our radar for a while now thanks to its clever mash-up of the strategy, roguelike, and card game genres. It looks a lot like a traditional strategy game, with an emphasis placed on assembling armies from different unit types and deploying them to fight enemies in tactical combat.

These battles, though, are played out with cards, the units assembled as a carefully constructed deck. It’s also a roguelike, where various elements, like the resources needed to upgrade or recruit units, can change from one run to the next.

In its current Early Access version, players can get a good sample of what the full game will entail. At launch, two of the three player origins are available and, per the game’s Steam page, “the structure and core mechanics of the game are already present now.”

Back in 2023, Sea of Stars was a critical and commercial hit, reminding gamers why SNES JRPGs like Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana were as beloved as they are. Two years later, the game has free DLC. Throes of the Watchmaker, which includes a new collectible called Time Pieces.

While Time Pieces are an entirely optional new item as you explore the clockwork circus of Horloge, they’re necessary to see and unlock everything the 8-10 hour DLC has to offer. If you want to acquire all 12 Time Runes, here’s how to find each of them.

All Time Rune Locations In Sea of Stars: Throes of the Watchmaker

An important thing to note is that while you’re searching throughout Horloge for the Time Runes, you most likely will not be collecting them in order. Some of these Time Runes are discovered naturally, while others will force you to engage in side quests or go to optional areas. With that in mind, here’s how to find all 12 Time Runes in Sea of Stars: Throes of the Watchmaker!

    • Time Rune #1: Found in Horloge in the southwest corner of town. You’ll have to defeat the three Wheels players to earn it. In order to challenge them, you must first find the Warlock figurine, which can be acquired in Were-Lake. However, in order to get it, you must have collected one of each type of Goodie Bag from the three lakes in Sea of Stars: Throes of the Watchmaker.
    • Time Rune #2: In Goodies Pond behind the waterfall.
    • Time Rune #3: In Rail Forest. After grappling onto the wall midway through the level, search the eastern side of the area until you find a hidden puzzle room.
    • Time Rune #4: Outside of Ivory Towers in the overworld.
    • Time Rune #5: In Ivory Towers, before entering the fourth tower, head south until you see a door. Enter it, then solve the light puzzle (you’ll have to make a shadow in the face of the Puppeteer to solve it).
    • Time Rune #6: In Horloge, solve the sliding block puzzle in the northeast of town (you’ll need to have completed Ivory Towers to access it).
    • Time Rune #7: To the east of Goodies Pond.
    • Time Rune #8: In Wolf Rock, after crossing the bridge, enter the cave to the east.
    • Time Rune #9: In Horloge, complete the combat challenge in the eastern tent.
    • Time Rune #10: To the north of Goodies Pond (you’ll need to have completed Ivory Towers to access it).
    • Time Rune #11: At the Big Top, after defeating Pantouf, find a small cave in the upper room to the right.
    • Time Rune #12: Complete Sea of Stars: Throes of the Watchmaker.

Once you’ve collected all 12 Time Runes, make your way to the giant clock in Horlege, insert them all into the clock, and watch the secret cutscene play! Now you’ve fully completed the DLC!

Sea of Stars is now available on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and Steam.

  • MindsEye is a GTA/Cyberpunk-ish game about shooting AI robots, and its co-ceo claims there’s “concerted effort” involving evil bots to make people think it’s rubbish

MindsEye is a GTA/Cyberpunk-ish game about shooting AI robots, and its co-ceo claims there’s “concerted effort” involving evil bots to make people think it’s rubbish

Yesterday, Build A Rocket Boy – the studio helmed by Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies – showed off some gameplay from the GTA-ish, Cyberpunk-ish, FarCry map editor-ish action thriller MindsEye, which is set to let you shoot a bunch of evil AI robots. Now, BARB’s co-ceo has claimed that there’s a real life “concerted effort to trash the game and the studio” going on, involving evil bots.

Yep, he seemingly just suggested these things were the case via some responses to players on the game’s Discord server, as you’d expect an exec to casually do.

Mark Gerhard, the co-ceo in question, goes by the handle MMG in the server, and was asked during a bit of back and forth about the game with fans: “Do you think that all the people who reacted negatively were financed by someone?” He responded: “100%”

Naturally, folks were a bit taken aback by an exec at a studio seemingly suggesting negative reception for a game had been paid for in some fashion, but Gerhard went on to add: “doesn’t take much to guess who”. A user in the server was quick to comment: “a co-CEO for a studio implying another studio is paying previewers to talk negatively about your game is an absolutely wild comment to make in a public environment in any situation”, to which the exec replied: “Not wild when it’s true…..”

Fans and content creators in the server who’d expressed criticism of MindsEye or Build A Rocket Boy then started to question whether Gerhard might be talking about them, leading the co-ceo to respond to such questions being asked about a user with the handle Cyber Boi.

“Folks I never said Cyber Boi was being paid by anyone,” Gerhard wrote, “I just said that there is a concerted effort by some people that don’t want to see Leslie or Build A Rocket Boy to be successful that are making a concerted effort to trash the game and the studio. Its pretty easy to see the bots and the repeated replies to any content that we put out.”

GTA YouTuber GameRoll then asked him directly: “So just to clarify – you believe that individuals, be it content creators or otherwise, have been paid off to criticise Mindseye?” “No I never said that,” Gerhard responded, “I do KNOW that there are bot farms posting negative comments and dislikes.”

VG247 has reached out to Build A Rocket Boy and MindsEye publisher IO Interactive for comment.

  • WoW Mists of Pandaria Classic finally gets a launch date, and it’s not far off

WoW Mists of Pandaria Classic finally gets a launch date, and it’s not far off

World of Warcraft has been around for a long, long time now and, as a result, its players are likely to have different opinions on their favorite eras of the game, that timeline punctuated by the launch of expansions ranging from The Burning Crusade through to The War Within. Most agree, though, that 2012’s Mists of Pandaria marks a high point for the long-running MMO, which has made its addition to WoW Classic eagerly anticipated. Today, Blizzard has announced that it won’t be much longer before the expansion is ready to play in something close to its original form once again.

The revamped, throwback version of World of Warcraft has steadily added in each expansion present in the original MMORPG since its 2019 launch. Now, Mists of Pandaria Classic is nearly here, providing a solid opportunity to return to the expansion or play it for the first time.

As before, the expansion brings players to the previously isolated lands of Pandaria, with the new characters and plotlines the setting contains. In the lead up to its full launch, a pre-expansion patch is set to arrive, bringing with it the ability to create a Pandaren character, use the Monk hero class, and earn the Shaohao’s Sage Serpent Skyriding mount to bring into regular WoW. Players can use the Joyous Journeys experience buff until this pre-patch launches if they’re in a hurry to reach level 85 in time for Mists of Pandaria. There’s also a pet battling minigame, reworked classes and loot gathering, as well as the Theramore’s Fall world event designed to serve as a prologue for the full expansion’s storyline.

World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria Classic launches on Monday July 21, 2025. The pre-patch arrives the week of Tuesday July 1, 2025.

Each Item offers unique strengths and, when combined thoughtfully, can create powerful synergies that turn the tide of battle. Noobs Must Die Item Tier List

None of the Items in Noobs Must Die are bad, but some are better than others. Each item has a synergy with another item, so even the Tier 1 Items have a use. Battle Armor is the best, as it allows you to become unkillable for a few seconds, letting you jump into groups of enemies and killing all of them without a risk of losing your run.

    Noobs Must Die Item List

Below is a complete and detailed list of all Items in Noobs Must Die, listed by how good they are and accompanied by their best synergies with other Items:

    Noobs Must Die item Synergy

Items in Noobs Must Die offer a creative and strategic system that rewards smart combinations and timing. Standout Items like Battle Armor and Windforce offer powerful defensive and offensive benefits, with the former granting invincibility and the latter summoning an orbiting sword for continuous damage. Pairing Windforce with Speed Coil or Bloxiade creates a fast, aggressive playstyle, while mixing Battle Armor with Regen Coil or Chezburger boosts survivability. Items like Domino Crown and Taco enhance critical and luck-based builds, and TNT can add unexpected explosive power when supported by Witches Brew or Breath of Fire.

How to get Items in Noobs Must Die

To get new Items in Noobs Must Die, you simply need to head to the Items Items on the right side of the screen and purchase new Items. Once you purchase them for the specified number of TIX, the Item will be available in the Item Pool for your next attempt.

  • Balatro meets Hades in The Devil’s Due, a poker deckbuilder where cheaters win

Balatro meets Hades in The Devil’s Due, a poker deckbuilder where cheaters win

They say that cheaters never prosper, but in The Devil’s Due, it’s the only way you’re going to save yourself from Hell. This deckbuilder sees your cowboy losing his soul to the Devil in a poker match, and the only escape is to put together the most dishonest, low-down dirty deck of cards you can.

The Devil’s Due may not be out until next year, but it’s already off to a strong start. The trailer for this card game tells its tale through a brilliantly silly song, with your cowboy protagonist on a Hades-style quest to escape the underworld.

To accomplish this goal, you’ll have to face off against a host of demonic poker-playing characters who want to send you back down to the lowest pits of Hell. So what do you do? You cheat. After all, no-one can send you to Hell for it, you’re already there! You’ll swap out cards, hide others, and generally be as underhanded as you can.

You can fail, absolutely, but that’s where this game’s roguelike element kicks in. You can unlock permanent upgrades, new cheat cards and more until you’ve finally earned your redemption.

    YouTube Thumbnail

Except, does it really count as redemption if you cheat your way there? Your cowboy’s cheating is what drew the Devil’s attention in the first place, after all. As Joachim Barrum, the artist behind the game’s delightfully bizarre monsters puts it:

“The monsters hate when you cheat. It makes them feel like they’re being treated unfairly. Sure they are demons. But which of you is the real tormentor?”

The Devil’s Due is pencilled in for a Q2 2026 release date. If you want something to play in the meantime, we’ve got the best strategy games and the best indie games.
