  • Sony really won’t be putting new first party games on PlayStation Plus day one any time soon

Sony really won’t be putting new first party games on PlayStation Plus day one any time soon

Sony is sticking to its guns, and won’t be releasing its first party games day one on its PlayStation Plus subscription service.

Speaking with GameFile, vice president of global services at PlayStation Nick Maguire said the company was “not looking to put games in day and date” on PS Plus, and will instead stick with its current way of doing things.

This is, of course, very different from Xbox, which often puts big first party releases such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and many more on Game Pass from the get go.

FBC: Firebreak Preview – How Does It Play And Is It Good? Watch on YouTube

Sony, meanwhile, has added some third party games like the excellent Blue Prince and Stray to PS Plus on the same day as their initial launch. But the likes of God of War Ragnarök and Horizon Forbidden West – both from Sony’s first party studios – weren’t added to the service until around a year after their initial release.

“Our strategy of finding four or five independent day-and-date titles – and using that to complement our strategy of bringing games in when they’re 12, 18 months old or older – that balance for us is working really well across the platform,” Maguire continued, before adding:

“If there were six or seven great opportunities, then we would go for them as well.”

When asked if the company had considered the benefit of putting its own first party live-service titles on PS Plus, with Concord – the debut game from Sony’s FireWalk Studios, which was taken offline just two weeks after its PS5 and PC debut – being used as an example, Maguire declined to give a specific comment. The Sony exec did say, however, that PS Plus has “proven itself to be a great way to introduce new players to franchises” when they arrive on the service.

“There’s always going to be a moment for any game where there’s the right time for it to go into Plus, when it’s ready to reach a wider audience or… to find new fans or new parts of our platform that it hasn’t already reached,” Maguire said.

This month, Remedy’s multiplayer Control spin-off FBC: Firebreak was available to all those on PlayStation Plus’ Extra and Premium tiers day one. However, even when included on a subscription service, some live-service games still flop. Square Enix‘s Foamstars, for example, failed to set the world alight despite being part of the PS Plus catalogue.

Today’s comments echo what the exec stated back in 2023, when Maguire said putting games on to Sony’s subscription service “a bit later in the life cycle” is working for the company. Therefore, this will “continue to be [its] strategy moving forward,” Maguire said at the time.

Earlier this month, meanwhile, Sony president Hideaki Nishino stated the company is open to adjusting the price of PlayStation Plus in the future, as it aims to “maximise profitability”.

  • Blending Vampire Survivors and Diablo, Skull Horde has a brand new demo

Blending Vampire Survivors and Diablo, Skull Horde has a brand new demo

Practically a modern classic, Vampire Survivors has inspired countless imitators. But the upcoming Skull Horde actually looks like a novel take on its roguelike inspiration. While in Vampire Survivors you gain new abilities to upgrade your avatar, in Skull Horde you’ll build a massive army of fellow skeletons and lead them to victory through a dank dungeon. The game has an earnest and goofy tone, like a Tales from the Crypt episode that hits just right. You can give the game a try right now.

As for how Skull Horde plays, each run will start in a new procedurally generated dungeon and you’ll control your army’s route through that dungeon. However, much like Vampire Survivors, you won’t control how your army acts and moves. Instead, you’ll select upgrades, purchase units, and pick up loot to improve your forces. You can also unlock perks that you’ll select at the beginning of the run, giving you powerful abilities and shaping your strategy for that run. But Skull Horde has some subtleties too. Staying longer on any floor of a dungeon can help you find more loot and money, but your enemies also grow more powerful.

However, what makes Skull Horde really sing is its aesthetics. Its pixel sprites are detailed, but also readable at a glance. Watching armies of bone battle armies of flesh has the same aesthetic appeal as any of the best RTS games. A crunchy, guitar-heavy soundtrack completes the vibe.

You can download and play the Skull Horde demo directly from the game’s Steam page.

  • GTA Online update hints that a long-requested feature may arrive before GTA 6

GTA Online update hints that a long-requested feature may arrive before GTA 6

Sure, GTA 5 and GTA Online have been with us for years now, with dozens of big updates adding new features and content to the Los Santos sandbox. However, there are still some highly-requested things that Rockstar hasn’t got around to implementing. One such feature is mansions – while lavish penthouse apartments are all well and good, players have long wanted massive, decadent homes to symbolize the millions (or sometimes billions) of dollars they’ve accrued over the years. Well, today’s latest major update to GTA Online may be teasing the addition of mansions, hopefully just in the nick of time before GTA 6 arrives.

It’s been going strong for well over a decade, but GTA Online’s days appear to be numbered. While Rockstar hasn’t outlined its plans for its multiplayer experience once the GTA 6 release date arrives, it feels highly likely that a new and improved version of GTA Online, set in the new location of Leonida, will be rolled out. This means that, including today’s latest major update to the GTA 5 version, there’s maybe just a couple of big content drops in Online left before GTA 6 hits.

The new Money Fronts update delivers plenty. There’s a money laundering system that gives you access to more businesses: a car wash, the Smoke on the Water cannabis store, and Higgins Helitours. Consider your business empire expanded. Local money laundering kingpin Mr Faber also has some fresh missions for you to complete, and there are several new vehicles to add to your collection.

It’s a solid update, but what’s even more exciting is a potential teaser that’s been datamined from its code.

    YouTube Thumbnail

As was initially uncovered by ‘floorball’ and shared by the likes of notable GTA news account ‘Tez2,’ the update hints that future Mr Faber missions will involve helping a “client with their luxury property development.” Elsewhere, code for a notification message has been found that reads: “You have earned an exclusive discount on a future property purchase with Prix Luxury Real Estate. They will be in contact again soon when properties become available.”

While this is nowhere near absolute confirmation that mansions will be coming to GTA Online soon, it is highly suggestive that they will be. At the very least, it appears some form of new, high-end residential property will be purchasable after helping out Mr Faber’s client. After years of apartments, it would be nice for this to be a totally new kind of residence, and a mansion would certainly fit both the “luxury” description and the shady business mogul fantasy of GTA Online.

From what I’m seeing online, these luxury property missions aren’t among the Mr Faber missions that are currently live. So, that means that they’ll either arrive at some point over the next few months, or could be added (along with the properties themselves) in GTA Online’s December major update. GTA Online updates are on a six-month cycle, so this would (barring any more delays) potentially be the last big content drop for GTA 5 Online before GTA 6 arrives in May next year. It would certainly be a way to finish with a flourish, as players have been requesting this for a very long time.

GTA Online: A screenshot of lines of code datamined from a GTA 5 update set against an orange backdrop

Another theory is that this could be teasing a feature in GTA 6 Online itself. Completing Mr Faber’s missions in GTA 5 could then get you a discount for a mansion in GTA 6. Given that a mansion featured as your base of operations in GTA Vice City’s story, and GTA 6 will of course be returning to that iconic location, it’s not outside the realm of possibility.

As mentioned, none of this is officially confirmed just yet, and even though it’s been datamined from GTA 5, we shouldn’t jump to definite conclusions.

  • After five tumultuous years, Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake is now “deep” in development

After five tumultuous years, Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake is now “deep” in development

It’s now been five years since Ubisoft’s beleaguered Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake was originally revealed, and a little over a year since the publisher last popped up to remind us all the project was still alive. But here we are again, 12 months on, with another brief update, this time letting fans know the remake remains “deep” in development.

Ubisoft’s Sands of Time remake was initially unveiled back in September 2020, when it was expected to arrive in January the following year. However, after its announcement trailer was met with a less than positive reception, Ubisoft kicked off what would prove to be a succession of delays. Eventually, the project moved from its original developers Ubisoft Pune and Mumbai to Ubisoft Montreal, where it was seemingly rebooted from scratch, and last year brought the news it wouldn’t be ready for release until 2026.

But while it seemed like Ubisoft might opt for radio silence until its remake was finally ready for its big re-reveal, the publisher has instead shared the briefest of updates today on social media, a little over a year since its last one. “Yep, we’re still deep in the game,” it wrote, “exploring, building, and ensuring the sands move with purpose.”

Here’s what the Sands of Time remake looked like before it was rebooted from scratch.Watch on YouTube

“This game is being crafted by a team that truly cares,” it continued, “and they’re pouring their hearts (and a lot of coffee) into every step. Thank you for sticking with us.” And that’s pretty much all we’re getting for now, aside from an accompanying bit of art showing a glass palace against a pink sky. Ubisoft also pointed fans in the direction of series spin-off The Rogue Prince of Persia, from Dead Cells studio Evil Empire, which is set to leave early access this August.

Ubisoft’s Sands of Time remake woes have continued to a tumultuous few years for the publisher, which has faced tumbling share prices and a number of high-profile flops in recent times, resulting in a string of layoffs and studio closures. As part of its attempts to right the ship, Ubisoft announced it was launching a new subsidiary dedicated to its big three IPs – Assassin’s Creed, Rainbow Six, and Far Cry – earlier this year. With those game under a new banner, Ubisoft itself will concentrate on a number of key areas, including “nurturing the development of iconic franchises”, including – presumably – Prince of Persia.

  • Space colony sim Oxygen Not Included faces down extinction in new dinosaur DLC

Space colony sim Oxygen Not Included faces down extinction in new dinosaur DLC

While Rimworld and Dwarf Fortress are the more common names you’ll hear mentioned in the colony sim space, Oxygen Not Included deserves similar respect. Developer Klei’s space base-building game boasts more than 120,000 player reviews with a 96% positive Steam score, and remains a pillar of the genre nearly six years after launch. Now, it’s just been given a lease of fresh life with the launch of a new ONI DLC, the Prehistoric Planet Pack, and there’s a hefty Steam sale discount on the base game if you’ve never tried it before, making now a perfect time to start.

This prehistoric Oxygen Not Included expansion pack introduces another starting world, Relica, to the intergalactic strategy game. There, your duplicants (ONI’s population) are tasked with preparing to deal with an incoming asteroid that threatens to demolish their home. The world has its own distinct biomes, with a wide range of dinosaur critters and similarly themed plants, natural elements, and resources. These include variants that have evolved to grow on walls or ceilings, letting you explore fresh possibilities for base optimization.

    YouTube Thumbnail

Peat is at the core of the new world’s ecosystem, and can be used to fuel power generators or in the new smoker, which turns tough dinosaur meat into juicy brisket. There’s also an emulsifier building that can transform various liquids into fluid compounds, and plenty more resources to discover. Keep your eyes out for the likes of amber, shale, nickel, resin, biodiesel, and iridium as you explore.

As for the dinosaurs, you’ll encounter plenty of new creatures. Among them are the Lumb, gentle giants that shake nearby structures and plants as they walk, and the carnivorous Rhex. This dangerous creature can be shorn to obtain feather fiber for textile production, but be sure to keep it away from the innocent Dartles or it’ll make a quick snack out of them. Other predators include the aquatic Jawbos, while Gnits present “a pesky but useful way to produce amber” if your other options are proving difficult

Two new duplicants, Maya and Higby, join the lineup as you rush to put together a sufficiently explosive payload to prevent the imminent asteroid impact. You won’t be able to stop it altogether, however, but the debris could play host to some particularly valuable treats if you’re able to track them down and investigate. If you’re feeling particularly bold, Klei promises “an extra-explosive scenario” available from the lab.

Oxygen Not Included Prehistoric Planet Pack DLC - A room in the space colony sim.

If you’re an Oxygen Not Included veteran, the Prehistoric Planet Pack promises to be a fantastically flavorful addition to your next playthrough, filled with a wide variety of new discoveries to make. For anyone who’s been tempted but never taken the plunge, there’s a massive Steam sale discount that could be the ideal excuse to change that.

Oxygen Not Included is 70% off on Steam until Thursday June 26, so expect to pay just $7.49 / £5.69. The Prehistoric Planet Pack is out now, priced at $7.99 / £6.69. Find it right here if you’re ready to prevent an extinction-level event.

  • 27 years later, super realistic classic milsim game is getting a surprise sequel

27 years later, super realistic classic milsim game is getting a surprise sequel

Microprose is on a bit of a roll lately. The publisher has reached into a rich back catalog and supported new concepts through work on games like Dagger Directive, Exfil, Battlefall: State of Conflict, B-17 Flying Fortress, and Afterconflict. Now, Microprose has announced another project that returns to its past with Spearhead 2, sequel to a 1998 tank simulator akin to Steel Beasts or War Thunder, now returning with a focus on co-op play and modern military technology.

Nearly three decades since the original simulation game launched, Spearhead 2 looks to pick up where its predecessor left off. Like the first game, the sequel will be a mix of simulation and action, with players heading into battle either alone or in co-op squads of up to 16 other people.

The game’s missions take place across various regions of Europe and the Middle East, featuring vehicles like APCs, IFVs, and, of course, an M1A2 Abrams tank, all modeled closely on their real-world counterparts. Spearhead 2 emphasizes tactics, though its meant to offer immediate action, too, and requires careful thinking to handle objectives like defending bases, killing important targets, surviving or conducting convoy ambushes, and clearing cities.

Though this sequel is the main part of Microprose’s surprise announcement, the publisher also plans to relaunch the original Spearhead on Steam as well.

Spearhead 2 doesn’t have a launch date yet, but you can find more details or wishlist it on Steam right here.

  • Hugely underrated medieval game Chivalry 2 is suddenly cheaper than ever

Hugely underrated medieval game Chivalry 2 is suddenly cheaper than ever

Torn Banner Studios has been busy working on the massive zombie survival game No More Room in Hell 2 lately, but, before it shifted attention to that project, the team put out Chivalry 2. The sequel to a 2012 game that brings the intense medieval battles of RTS games like Crusader Kings 3, Total War: Medieval 2, or Mount and Blade 2: Bannerlords into a more intimate, action-heavy focus, it serves as one of the most unique multiplayer projects to date. It’s now cheaper than ever to dig into the game for yourself, as Chivalry 2 is currently available at a steep discount on Steam.

A kind of low technology take on the multiplayer FPS game, Chivalry 2 is a deep but immediately enjoyable game that pits players against each other as soldiers in a fictional medieval war. Our review gave it an 8/10, saying that Chivalry 2’s “unswerving dedication to fun and goofiness makes it a rare treat in modern multiplayer gaming.”

Its mix of impactful combat, whose highlight is facing down enemies with melee weapons like swords or axes, and ludicrous, over-the-top presentation is excellent. Whether charging across a field on the back of a horse or screaming a war cry as clumps of soldiers stand around hacking at one another, Chivalry 2 is a good time for dedicated and less invested players alike.

    YouTube Thumbnail

Now is also a good time to give it a try. Chivalry 2 is 80% off on Steam until Thursday June 26, which makes it $7.99 USD / £7.19. Grab a copy right here.

  • Rainbow Six Siege X is live, and it’s already sparked a surge for Ubisoft’s FPS

Rainbow Six Siege X is live, and it’s already sparked a surge for Ubisoft’s FPS

It’s been nearly a decade since Ubisoft first launched Rainbow Six Siege. In the time since, the multiplayer FPS has improved enormously, attracting a devoted audience and cementing itself as one of the best options in a genre that also includes PUBG, Valorant, and Marvel Rivals. To keep that momentum going into its tenth year and beyond, Ubisoft has put out a sweeping overhaul of Siege with today’s launch of Rainbow Six Siege X. Even though it’s only been out for a few hours, this decision seems to have been a good one, as the game’s already attracted a massive player base and strong reviews on Steam.

Rainbow Six Siege X takes the long-running FPS game‘s foundation and revitalizes it with a number of changes. Most immediately noticeable is a rework of its visuals, applied to five maps at the time of launch, and tweaks to the core design of the game, including the ability to shoot and destroy objects like pipes and fire extinguishers. The relaunch also offers a new 6v6 mode called Dual Front and allows previous Siege players to carry over their progress, receive rewards based on how long they’ve been playing, and keep their ability to get into modes from before X launched.

So far, Siege X is going over well with players. Not only have its user reviews shot upward in the hours since launch, but it’s also hit its highest player count in more than a year. At the time of writing, the game has 134,366 active players, down from a 24-hour peak of 142,025 earlier today. That 24-hour peak represents the most active players since April, 2024, which reached 156,080.

Rainbow Six Siege X is out now. You can download it for free on Steam right here.
