  • Rapid-fire RTS game Battle Aces is no more as studio ends development

Rapid-fire RTS game Battle Aces is no more as studio ends development

It’s always heart-breaking to see a promising new multiplayer game scrapped, but it’s even sadder still to see one wrap up development before it even fully launches. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what’s happened to Battle Aces – an RTS game aiming to deliver super-fast 1v1 and 2v2 matches while still boasting plenty of strategic depth. Despite its promising premise, and the fact that it has a former Starcraft dev as a game director, Battle Aces has reached the end of its journey.

The debut project from Uncapped Games, Battle Aces certainly generated a lot of initial interest among RTS game lovers. First, it had David Kim at the helm – a Blizzard veteran who served as senior game designer on Starcraft 2 for roughly a decade. Secondly, it aimed to break new ground by offering more accessible, rapid multiplayer matches versus the lengthy slogs you can often become embroiled in. It’s been playable already thanks to some early betas, and it looked to be coming along nicely. However, Uncapped says that it can’t see a successful route forward for its ambitious project.

“Today, with deep regret, we are announcing that development on Battle Aces has come to an end,” a statement posted by Uncapped reads. “Creating Battle Aces has been tremendously rewarding and we are grateful for the passion and support from our community. Unfortunately, the returns from early testing were not strong enough to support continued development.

“This decision was not made lightly. Battle Aces represented a bold vision — our attempt to reimagine real-time strategy for a new generation. We set out to create something fast, tactical, and approachable, while still delivering the depth that makes RTS special. Every step of the way, from internal playtests to closed betas, we were fueled by your enthusiasm, feedback, and support.”

    YouTube Thumbnail

The statement doesn’t mention what the future holds for the studio. My fear is that layoffs may follow if it doesn’t have enough funding to spin up a new project post-Battle Aces. If it does, then maybe we’ll see a new strategy game from Kim and the team in the future.

It is a real shame that Battle Aces won’t even get a shot in early access, but in a world where ambitious, big-budget multiplayer games can quickly nosedive into an unprofitable state after launching, this appears to just be a case of Uncapped cutting its losses and not taking the gamble. However, there are still plenty of great free PC games out there that you can enjoy right now and that have bright futures ahead.

  • Lost Ark Abyssal Assault takes the free MMORPG to an all-new region

Lost Ark Abyssal Assault takes the free MMORPG to an all-new region

The Lost Ark Abyssal Assault update has landed, bringing a new region to explore in the Amazon Games and Smilegate MMORPG. This latest overhaul whisks us away to a previously inaccessible continent in search of adventure, unleashes the third act of the Kazeros Raid, and heralds the return of the Arkesia Grand Prix event. As Amazon Games prepares to deliver some of its biggest changes to the multiplayer ARPG yet, in service of making Lost Ark more approachable and reducing its notorious grind, this update is set to deliver some of the endgame challenge that veterans have been craving.

The big highlight of this latest Lost Ark update is the introduction of new continent Rimeria. It’s been closed off for many years after its local tribe, the Yoz, managed to seal a rift created by an invading force of monsters known as the Pitch Black Night. Now, however, that great seal is starting to crack, threatening to unleash the nightmares once more. In order to help, we’re heading to the South Isle, where we’ll join Shandi, Zakra, and the Rimeria Elders. You’ll need to have reached item level 1640 in the free Steam game to make the journey, along with completing the ‘Paving the Way to Victory’ and ‘The Way Forward’ quests.

    YouTube Thumbnail

Launching on Wednesday June 4, two weeks after this update, is the third act of the Kazeros Raid. This eight-player series of encounters has been described as particularly challenging by the Korean audience that has already tackled it, so make sure you’re on top form. It’ll include both normal difficulty (item level 1680) and a hard mode (1700). Amazon Games has also been teasing the possibility of an even more punishing variant arriving in the future, so get your practice in now.

If you’re looking for something else to keep you busy in the meantime, the Arkesia Grand Prix is back and runs until Wednesday July 23, letting you earn coins through races, daily login bonuses, and weekly missions. These can then be exchanged for honing materials, utility items, and even some premium items such as legendary card packs. If you want to get even more fashionable, there’s a new ‘K-Pop Idol collection’ in Neria’s Wardrobe.

The Lost Ark Abyssal Assault update is live now, and you can play for free on Steam. Take a look through the patch notes courtesy of Amazon Games and Smilegate for all the additional tweaks and balance changes. Then, be sure to catch up on the team’s plans for the new Paradise mode that’s set to offer a dramatic new way to play, designed to be new-player friendly and accessible to all.

Alternatively, take a look through more of the best MMORPGs to play in 2025, or try one of the best games like Diablo if you can’t get enough ARPGs in your life.

  • Lies of P is getting difficulty options, but devs assure that it’s still as hard

Lies of P is getting difficulty options, but devs assure that it’s still as hard

We recently attended a Q&A session at Lies of P Overture‘s preview event, where game director Choi Ji-won revealed that two easier difficulty levels are being added to the base game, alongside two harder modes for boss rush. While he assures us that the Bloodborne-esque, Victorian-themed adventure “is always [going to be] hard,” the move will open up the game to a whole slew of new players, while the additional boss rush difficulties challenge soulslike veterans.

The topic of difficulty came up a few times during the session which, in many ways, makes sense. At its core, Lies of P is a soulslike game and, by definition, it’s supposed to be as hard as nails. Adding different challenge ratings somewhat flies in the face of the very essence of what these games are meant to be.

    YouTube Thumbnail

Choi confirms that the reasoning behind the decision is to open the game up to a wider player base in an attempt to capture the audience that likely wrote it off as being too much of a challenge. More people playing can only be a good thing and, given Lauren’s glowing Lies of P review, they won’t be disappointed.

He also jokes that the game “is always difficult,” but states that titles like Lies of P aren’t about being needlessly difficult, but instead creating a sense of accomplishment in players when they finally “figure it out,” whether that be a tough boss or tricky area.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Lies of P’s boss rush mode is getting even harder, with two new difficulty settings that ramp the pressure up to eleven.  Defeating these fearsome foes will net you various exclusive rewards, so if you really want to prove that you are, in fact, Krat’s finest warrior, you can do so.

A young boy with dark hair fires a bow at a monster in the sky as the Northern Lights shine

But, while the difficulty changes are certainly the headliner, I had one question in mind:  why is Overture a prequel, and does it have anything to do with the multiple endings and not wanting to commit to which one was canon? I put this question to Choi.

He confirms that Lies of P’s branching storyline has nothing to do with this decision. Instead, the reason Overture is a prequel is because there was a lot of content that simply didn’t make it into the base game. With Overture included, now Lies of P feels like a “complete version” of Choi and the team’s vision.

    YouTube Thumbnail

Lies of P Overture is set to release sometime in 2026 and will cost $29.99.  You can wishlist it here. A free update is also coming to the base game that will introduce a host of fresh features, including the aforementioned difficulty settings and a new Boss Rush mode.

  • Blades of Fire review – brutal action RPG can’t get weird enough

Blades of Fire review – brutal action RPG can’t get weird enough

    Verdict

With its weapon-building systems and deliberate, targeted combat, Blades of Fire has a lot of fresh-feeling ideas. Its control scheme is strange and will force you to press each button with care. Its granular forging system makes you consider every weapon in your arsenal. But however differently it approaches them, the game only offers the same thrills as other action games of its ilk. Blades of Fire feels unique, but just can’t get weird enough.

The creators of Blades of Fire have played a lot of videogames. Developer Mercurysteam has spent a decade-plus working on classic series like Castlevania and Metroid. As might befit that pedigree, its latest effort is a bone-deep rethinking of action RPG trends. From moment to moment, Blades of Fire plays unlike anything else. The God of War and Dark Souls influence is apparent, but the game also has subtler inspirations. The swinging positionality of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, for one, and the gonzo action and stilted earnestness of Dragon’s Dogma for another. In an era of perfunctory crafting systems, Blades of Fire’s crafting alters every swing of every sword. However, despite its relentless cleverness, it can’t help but feel mundane and overdrawn. It lacks the verve of the genre’s best because it is so focused on its influences, resulting in a game that can feel lifeless and self-conscious. Blades of Fire might be a weird original, but it’s never quite weird enough.

On paper, Blades of Fire couldn’t be more typical. Protagonist Aran de Lira is a tough, gruff, and capable man. His family is dead. He lives alone on the edge of an oppressive kingdom, whose evil queen (also Aran’s childhood friend) turned all steel into stone, obliterating any challenge to her realm. When an old friend gives him one of the hammers that forged the world – allowing Aran to build an arsenal of steel weapons – he travels to end the queen’s reign once and for all, with the help of the puckish student Adso. For the most part, your adventure goes how you’d expect, with powerful foes to best, ancient mysteries to solve, and dank dungeons to explore.

Blades of Fire protagonist Aran de Lira stands before a gigantic metal man, framed by two statues. In the foreground is a forge lit by flame.

Blades of Fire’s first gimmick is its forging system. You make every weapon from relative scratch, customizing each aspect of its construction, like the form of a sword’s crossguard or the length of a spear’s staff. Enemies drop magical items that temper the steel and wood you use to construct your weapons, making them better at blocking damage, piercing armor, or enduring as many fights as possible. Each variable changes the weapon, some by a little and some by a lot. No single one is good at everything, so you’ll have to craft to suit individual encounters or specific enemies. Unlike some of its RPG inspirations, Blades of Fire has no stat-based builds. You might develop favorites, but you’ll inevitably have to use multiple weapon types to progress.

As for combat, it features some novel ideas. While this is an action game at its heart, there are no real combos (though some attacks flow better together than others). Instead, you’ll pick the direction of your swings. Each weapon also bludgeons, pierces, or slashes foes, and these different damage types will be better (or worse) at hurting specific combatants. You can also swap between using a weapon’s blade or point. Slashes might help you better handle multiple swarming zombies, while stabbing could pierce a knight’s heavy armor. This system is the game’s biggest asset. The control scheme is unfamiliar enough that your muscle memory from other action RPGs is mostly useless. Enemy weaknesses and weak points also force you to pay attention and swap weapons, even in the heat of battle.

A scene of battle from Blades of Fire. The player character and an enemy stand off, both blocking with their swords.

Adso will be your constant companion throughout, though you can send him back to camp if he annoys you. He is quite helpful, even if he’s useless in combat. Instead, he takes notes, detailing strategies to best enemies. Your relationship with Adso and his role as a helper closely models Atreus in 2018’s God of War reboot, but with a key difference: they have no history together. Most of their dialogue can trigger at one of multiple points, so their relationship has to remain somewhat static, meaning their dynamic lacks tension. I’m not saying their relationship has to be hostile, and they’re more richly explored in cutscenes, but the game’s structure makes it difficult for them to have an arc together. The fact that you can send him back to camp for extended periods underlines this. The game isn’t confident enough to invest in him.

These issues extend to Blades of Fire’s tone and setting. Generously, it feels like a Grimm fairy tale. The characters are broad legends. The lands they wander are old (and usually some variety of haunted). But it features a gentleness and a sense of humor. It bears a goofy grin, before it bares its fangs. In practice, however, it can feel like a Dreamworks cartoon with blood and guts. The effect is less the campfire chill of a good, brutal tale and more the muddled fantasy novel your friend in high school was writing. It’s enthusiastic and earnest, even charming, but is ultimately juvenile.

A menu from Blades of Fire, showing a series of options for an

Blades of Fire’s world is dense, even if it often feels small. Some complain about the backtracking in Metroid, but every time you return to an old area in those games, your means of traversal will have expanded. Blades of Fire is packed with secrets, and it gives you free rein to explore at your leisure, but it regularly fails to surprise.

It’s also a very long game. I played nearly 20 hours before leaving its first map. This does give Aran’s journey a truly titanic scale, but it incorrectly assumes that its sometimes-exhilarating, often one-note combat is enough to sustain it over dozens of hours. So many of Blades of Fire’s enemies are basic reskins, even within the first few areas. Once you have an enemy’s attack patterns down, it becomes a chore to fight them time and again.

Blades of Fire characters Aran de Lira and Adso talking in a little cottage.

Blades of Fire is therefore best played at a leisurely pace, just like how an epic fantasy novel is best read. You should play it enough that you maintain muscle memory, but not so much as to burn yourself out on it. Still, I’m not convinced that playing it over a longer period would alleviate my frustrations. Even its title is staggeringly unevocative. Blades of Fire cannot be described cleanly as derivative, but it only approaches the same feeling I get from other games of its kind from a new angle. I want more from a game that demands so much of my time.

  • Valorborn is an ambitious medieval RPG made by just three developers

Valorborn is an ambitious medieval RPG made by just three developers

There are plenty of great medieval RPGs out there right now, from fresh releases like Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 to stalwarts such as Skyrim, and there are plenty more on the horizon as well. Adding to that list is Valorborn, which isn’t lacking in ambition, despite its tiny team of just three developers. With an old-school feel of games like Gothic and even a dash of Runescape, and embracing party-based gameplay, it’s certainly worth checking out.

Given its scope, and its general vibe, I half expected Valorborn to be a multiplayer, MMO-style affair at first. However, it’s aiming to deliver a lot of the depth and many of the features you’d expect from larger experiences into a single-player, open-world RPG. Its medieval fantasy world is home to everything you’d expect. It’s got several varied biomes, including an intriguing looking grayscale location or realm. You’ll face enemies such as reanimated skeleton soldiers, wolves, and trolls. You’ll encounter a swathe of NPCs. Every single building, castle, and cave can be entered and explored.

As you progress through Valorborn, you can take your custom character down one of two paths – assemble a party of companions to aid you in battle, or become a lone ranger taking everything on solo. Should you choose to bring other characters along for the ride, you’ll not only unravel your own story but theirs as well. I do love a good companion questline.

As all good RPGs should, you’ve got the freedom to level up in whichever disciplines and skills you feel fit. Become an all-rounder, or specialize in certain areas to become a super strong warrior, a master hunter, or a sneaky assassin.

    YouTube Thumbnail

Acquiring resources, building, and crafting are also core components of Valorborn. As well as renting houses in villages that you can then customize to your heart’s content, you can also construct bases out in the field when exploring. Weapons, armor, and tools can all be crafted from your home or a base. The resources you’ll need for all this can be looted, harvested, or hunted from the world around you.

I wouldn’t say there’s anything massively groundbreaking or surprising about Valorborn in comparison to other third-person RPGs out there already, but what is commendable is how a world this big and systems this deep are being made by Laps Games, a team of just three developers.

Valorborn is aiming to launch in early access in Q3 of 2025. If you want to learn more about it, or add it to your Steam wishlist, head to its store page here.

  • Diablo 4 and Path of Exile 2 have a fresh rival as pixel-art ARPG soars on Steam

Diablo 4 and Path of Exile 2 have a fresh rival as pixel-art ARPG soars on Steam

Diablo 4 Season 8 is perfectly fine, but feels safe and more of the same. Path of Exile 2’s Dawn of the Hunt has improved dramatically since its rocky release, but the early-access ARPG still has a long way to go. Last Epoch Season 2 is strong, but by now you may be looking for something fresh. Enter The Slormancer, a pixel-art indie ARPG from Slormite Studios that was launched out of early access at the start of this week, and has since built up impressive momentum with very positive Steam reviews and an ever-growing player count.

As either a Mighty Knight, Fierce Huntress, or Mischievous Mage, it’s your job to put a stop to an evil warlock called The Slormancer and his hordes of troublesome minions. It’s got everything that makes the best games like Diablo tick. Fast-paced action that sees you dancing through environments and blowing up dozens of hostile goons in quick succession, pouring damage numbers across the screen. Over 200 abilities, upgrades, and passives to create near-limitless build variations. An endless hunt for perfect loot with 200 legendary affixes, 120 game-changing unique weapons, and the ability to keep boosting your gear’s power as much as you want.

    YouTube Thumbnail

Slormite Studios emphasizes its focus on “collection and progression,” meaning you’re able to switch at any point between absolutely anything you’ve unlocked. That includes all skills you’ve gained access to, any items you’ve previously found, and even the very classes themselves. This creates a level of flexibility beyond what you’ll find in most other ARPGs, encouraging and rewarding experimentation.

Don’t worry about losing all your hard work when you switch builds, either; from loadouts to loot filters, The Slormancer has lots of welcome quality-of-life features. It even boasts a sprawling Ancestral Skill Tree that could give Path of Exile a run for its money, with more than 150 element-related skills and passives available to unlock. Your journey will take you across seven environments with a ton of visual variety, and its brief campaign is just the beginning of a much longer quest for power.

First launched into early access in 2021, The Slormancer is now out in full, and it’s quickly beginning to snowball as word of mouth spreads. What began as a gradual climb has escalated to a weekend high of 10,989 concurrent Steam players. The user reviews are filled with praise, too, with particular love given to the freedom of experimentation on offer and the ability to create weird and wacky builds on a whim based on just one small starting idea.

The Slormancer - The indie ARPG's skill screen for the Mischievous Mage class.

The Slormancer 1.0 is out now on Steam. Developer Slormite Studios is offering a 25% discount until Tuesday May 20, meaning you’ll pay $14.99 / £12.56. If you’re reading this early on and fancy yourself a new adventure, there’s still time to grab it at the lower price, so do so while you can.

  • Lead Minecraft developer finally reveals the secret behind iconic squid milk bug

Lead Minecraft developer finally reveals the secret behind iconic squid milk bug

As of right now, all seems well in Minecraft world. Minecraft Live was a blast, the most recent Snapshots have introduced improvements to both long-range combat and to leashes, and the Minecraft movie is an enormous success. But like any and every videogame, Mojang’s blocky builder has experienced its share of technical troubles. Veterans might recall the dancing Enderdragon. In fact, Minecraft’s most iconic enemy, the Creeper, is the result of a glitch that twisted and elongated the original character model for pigs. Now, Jens Bergensten, Mojang’s chief creative officer, explains the history of one of the best Minecraft bugs. Who here remembers squid milk?

With 2025 seemingly as busy as ever for Mojang’s building game, make sure you’re up to speed with the best Minecraft seeds and also the best Minecraft mods. Once you’ve found a new world and gotten settled, see if you can find yourself a friendly squid. Hopefully, you will notice two things: one, the squid is swimming in the water and two, no matter how hard you try, you cannot milk it, like a cow. As one of Minecraft‘s most legendary developers explains, this wasn’t always the case.

“When I started working on Minecraft, I didn’t really know exactly how everything worked,” Bergensten, who has co-developed Minecraft since 2010, explains. “I wanted to add a new mob, so I added a squid. The best way for me to do that was to copy an existing mob, so I based the squid on the cow mob, but I forgot to remove the milking behavior.

“For a while, you could actually milk the squid, which was a bit silly and also… not the intended behavior. Again, the squid was my first mob, so I managed to add more problems to it. In the way I made the movement code, the server and client wouldn’t agree on where the squid actually was. This caused a behavior where you would occasionally see squids flying around in the air, the ‘flying squid’ bug.”

Squid milking (what a wonderful combination of words) was removed from Minecraft in 2011. Maybe, though, it could make a return. I’m not saying you should be able to get cow’s milk from squids, but maybe black dye? Either way, I will agree that squids should remain in the water and not the sky.

Helldivers 2 dev says it will call “100%” of the shots on its next game

With Helldivers 2 still going strong, despite having to navigate some difficult moments since its launch last year, the top dog at developer Arrowhead has revealed that it is now exploring some “cool concepts” for its next game, which will also be “100%” funded by the Swedish studio. This confirms that Arrowhead won’t be continuing its partnership with Sony and Playstation for its next project, even though “there would be no Helldivers if it wasn’t for them.”

Helldivers 2 is a brilliant and massively successful co-op game, and the partnership between Arrowhead and Playstation has, on the whole, worked out a treat. From Arrowhead’s perspective, the Playstation marketing machine and backing helped elevate Helldivers 2 to a place it maybe wouldn’t have gotten to without it. From Sony’s side, having Helldivers 2 in its slate helped spare its blushes in what was a rough time for its live service endeavors.

However, it has caused some stumbling blocks – most notably the infamous review bombing that occurred after Sony tried to force Steam players into creating and linking Playstation account, something that was not only disliked but saw the game delisted from Valve’s storefront in dozens of countries due to them not having PSN support. This low point has fueled a narrative in some circles that Arrowhead would’ve been better off without Sony. But even though the studio’s head honcho has today confirmed it won’t be partnering with Sony (or anyone else, for that matter) in the development of its next game, it remains full of praise and gratitude.

As was spotted by Forbes, a post in the Helldivers 2 Discord server by CEO Shams Jorjani reads: “The wonderful thing is that thanks to the amazing support of you fine people Arrowhead’s future is quite bright and we have the freedom to explore some really cool concepts that we couldn’t have otherwise. Game 6 (our next project) will happen the way it will happen thanks to you.” He adds that Arrowhead’s next game “is 100% funded by ourselves so we’ll call 100% of those shots.”

Making clear his admiration for Sony, Jorjani also says that “Playstation are great. There would be no Helldivers if it wasn’t for them. We’re open to working with them again in the future. They are incredibly game/dev oriented. Solid partners. And this is me just saying it like it is. Not blowing smoke up their asses.”

I’m excited to see what Arrowhead can do outside of the Helldivers universe, which I’m guessing is the direction it’s going in seeing as Sony isn’t on board for its next game. It’s shown it’s adept at building amazing, dynamic game worlds, so I could certainly see it tapping into that even more for future projects. Alternatively, given that Jorjani talks of having real “freedom” now, it could be something completely unexpected and unlike anything it’s done before.
