  • Blending Vampire Survivors and Diablo, Skull Horde has a brand new demo

Blending Vampire Survivors and Diablo, Skull Horde has a brand new demo

Practically a modern classic, Vampire Survivors has inspired countless imitators. But the upcoming Skull Horde actually looks like a novel take on its roguelike inspiration. While in Vampire Survivors you gain new abilities to upgrade your avatar, in Skull Horde you’ll build a massive army of fellow skeletons and lead them to victory through a dank dungeon. The game has an earnest and goofy tone, like a Tales from the Crypt episode that hits just right. You can give the game a try right now.

As for how Skull Horde plays, each run will start in a new procedurally generated dungeon and you’ll control your army’s route through that dungeon. However, much like Vampire Survivors, you won’t control how your army acts and moves. Instead, you’ll select upgrades, purchase units, and pick up loot to improve your forces. You can also unlock perks that you’ll select at the beginning of the run, giving you powerful abilities and shaping your strategy for that run. But Skull Horde has some subtleties too. Staying longer on any floor of a dungeon can help you find more loot and money, but your enemies also grow more powerful.

However, what makes Skull Horde really sing is its aesthetics. Its pixel sprites are detailed, but also readable at a glance. Watching armies of bone battle armies of flesh has the same aesthetic appeal as any of the best RTS games. A crunchy, guitar-heavy soundtrack completes the vibe.

  • Diablo Immortal celebrates its birthday with loads of events and freebies

Diablo Immortal celebrates its birthday with loads of events and freebies

With Diablo 4 Season 8, Path of Exile 2 0.2.0, and Last Epoch Season 2 all well underway, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to ARPGs at the moment. This is undoubtedly a good thing, but sometimes we just want to try something new or retreat to the familiar instead. So whether you’re all caught up on where the genre is right now, or just fancy something a little different, Blizzard’s Diablo Immortal is here to answer the call. To celebrate the game’s third anniversary, you can nab some freebies and participate in special limited-time events, so now’s the time to jump back in.

There’s a lot going on in Diablo Immortal throughout June, so I’m going to break it down for you. For starters, you can get involved with the Trial of True Evils event. This is a gauntlet of the most fearsome bosses from across Immortal’s history, as The Butcher, Baal, Skarn, and Diablo itself are all going to try and take you out. You can challenge a new boss every few days up until Thursday June 19, and then fight them all back-to-back. It doesn’t matter exactly how strong you are, either, as each of the bosses will scale to your power (at level 30 and above), too.

Trial of True Evils isn’t the only limited-time event, either. Running from Wednesday June 4 to Wednesday July 2 is Infernal Trials, where you’ll earn points in the Survivor’s Bane, Trial of the Hordes, Fractured Plane, and Wild Brawl events. If you get enough points throughout the RPG, you can nab rewards like Telluric Pearls, Legendary items, 1-Star Legendary Gems, and more.

You also have a way to convert your surplus Set items into an amplified version of themselves with the Set Gear Reforging event. Running until June 19, you can take three of the same Set item and reforge them into one version of it with up to three attributes and three affixes, recycling them into an even better item.

It’s not just events, though, as you can nab yourself some freebies in the free PC game throughout the anniversary event. From now until Wednesday June 19, there’s a Baby Butcher Transmog for your pet, an anniversary avatar frame, Legendary Crests, random Set items, random Legendary items, and more. Then, starting on June 19 and running up until June 2, you can nab the Blood Floe Legendary Gem. Blizzard says you need to be level 30 or above and link your Immortal and Battle.net accounts, but teases that it’s “coated in crimson and foretold to be introduced in our next major update.”

Blizzard is starting the Diablo Immortal third anniversary celebrations on Sunday June 1, so you’ll want to drop in soon to get all the goodies. You can brush up on all of the Immortal celebrations here.

If you want even more, we’ve got all the best games like Diablo you can play today, alongside some truly excellent fantasy games.

  • Diablo 4 and Path of Exile 2 have a fresh rival as pixel-art ARPG soars on Steam

Diablo 4 and Path of Exile 2 have a fresh rival as pixel-art ARPG soars on Steam

Diablo 4 Season 8 is perfectly fine, but feels safe and more of the same. Path of Exile 2’s Dawn of the Hunt has improved dramatically since its rocky release, but the early-access ARPG still has a long way to go. Last Epoch Season 2 is strong, but by now you may be looking for something fresh. Enter The Slormancer, a pixel-art indie ARPG from Slormite Studios that was launched out of early access at the start of this week, and has since built up impressive momentum with very positive Steam reviews and an ever-growing player count.

As either a Mighty Knight, Fierce Huntress, or Mischievous Mage, it’s your job to put a stop to an evil warlock called The Slormancer and his hordes of troublesome minions. It’s got everything that makes the best games like Diablo tick. Fast-paced action that sees you dancing through environments and blowing up dozens of hostile goons in quick succession, pouring damage numbers across the screen. Over 200 abilities, upgrades, and passives to create near-limitless build variations. An endless hunt for perfect loot with 200 legendary affixes, 120 game-changing unique weapons, and the ability to keep boosting your gear’s power as much as you want.

Slormite Studios emphasizes its focus on “collection and progression,” meaning you’re able to switch at any point between absolutely anything you’ve unlocked. That includes all skills you’ve gained access to, any items you’ve previously found, and even the very classes themselves. This creates a level of flexibility beyond what you’ll find in most other ARPGs, encouraging and rewarding experimentation.

Don’t worry about losing all your hard work when you switch builds, either; from loadouts to loot filters, The Slormancer has lots of welcome quality-of-life features. It even boasts a sprawling Ancestral Skill Tree that could give Path of Exile a run for its money, with more than 150 element-related skills and passives available to unlock. Your journey will take you across seven environments with a ton of visual variety, and its brief campaign is just the beginning of a much longer quest for power.

First launched into early access in 2021, The Slormancer is now out in full, and it’s quickly beginning to snowball as word of mouth spreads. What began as a gradual climb has escalated to a weekend high of 10,989 concurrent Steam players. The user reviews are filled with praise, too, with particular love given to the freedom of experimentation on offer and the ability to create weird and wacky builds on a whim based on just one small starting idea.

The Slormancer - The indie ARPG's skill screen for the Mischievous Mage class.

The Slormancer 1.0 is out now on Steam. Developer Slormite Studios is offering a 25% discount until Tuesday May 20, meaning you’ll pay $14.99 / £12.56. If you’re reading this early on and fancy yourself a new adventure, there’s still time to grab it at the lower price, so do so while you can.

  • Diablo 4 announces a crossover with blood and guts fantasy manga Berserk

Diablo 4 announces a crossover with blood and guts fantasy manga Berserk

Guest characters are increasingly common in gaming, but we wouldn’t in a million years have guessed the nature of Diablo 4’s upcoming crossover. Blizzard has announced its dungeon crawler is teaming up with Berserk, the long-running fantasy manga that inspired the Dark Souls series.

As unlikely as this crossover might seem, it could be just what Diablo 4 needs. Blizzard has already confirmed that this action RPG’s next expansion won’t arrive until 2026, so we welcome anything that helps things fresh.

Blizzard’s Diablo 4 2025 roadmap did tease a tie-in with a well-known IP, but our money was on Doom: The Dark Ages, not least because Microsoft owns both properties. But the more we think about this crossover, the more it makes sense.

Like Diablo 4, Berserk doesn’t shy away from blood and guts. Its central character is, in fact, called Guts, which gives you an idea of what to expect. Known for its gore, this dark fantasy manga follows the violent exploits of a mercenary who battles humans, monsters and demons. And while Guts’ initial instinct is to simply survive, he wouldn’t think twice about ramming Diablo’s Soulstone into his forehead. The manga is currently ongoing and it’s been adapted into an anime several times.

Blizzard has released an animated teaser, which you can watch above, but it has yet to reveal the exact nature of this crossover. That’s not Guts in the teaser, so it’s unlikely he’ll figure heavily into things. But we’d expect there to be cosmetics, the odd event or two and maybe some ridiculously oversized swords.

In the meantime, if you’re battling your way through Diablo 4 and need a little help, we’ve got you covered. To give you a head start, we’ve rounded up the best Diablo 4 builds and the best Diablo 4 classes.
