Player outrage about Rainbow 6 Siege’s free currency nerf prompts changes

Police breach a door in Rainbow 6 Siege

Rainbow Six Siege X launched earlier this month as a free-to-play model after years of, well, not being. While this will undoubtedly have brought some new onlookers to peer through its window, existing players are worried that fears that the free-to-play iteration was only ever going to lead to publisher greed are already coming true.

Siege’s in-game currency, called Renown, has been significantly harder to come by since the switch to free, meaning more of a grind to unlock operators and skins, unless you are, of course, prepared to pony up some real-world cash to get there quicker.

A huge nerf seems to have been applied to the gained Renown when you lose a game, and as most people will lose games, it means it is going to hoover up a ton of extra time before you save up the amounts you were getting before the big switch.

Check out the surprise on my face currently. No, seriously, look closer.

A genuine bug, or a commercial decision… or both

Ubisoft has moved to soften the criticism with Creative Director Alex Karpazis telling PC Gamer,

“We have noticed that we do have a smaller payout, something close to 10% less than what we used to have before Siege X’s launch,” he said. “And actually, as of a couple of hours ago, we have made a buff to that. We’ve seen the communication online, and we acknowledge it in the data as well.”

Isn’t it strange how nobody expected it?

Siege X, since it’s name and model change, has been roaring back up the Steam charts when it comes to players, with many ex-players returning alongside plenty of noobs. Ubisoft, to its credit, has always backed the game when others may have ditched it alongside games like, er, The Crew.

It’s a tricky balance when it comes to reinvigorating the playerbase, trying to gen more revenue and keep existing players happy. Almost impossible, I would imagine, and while it isn’t really clear yet, how much of a buff renown has got – it’s unlikely to have returned to previous levels, it may at least keep the veteran wolves from the door for a short while at least.

  • Lost Ark Abyssal Assault takes the free MMORPG to an all-new region

Lost Ark Abyssal Assault takes the free MMORPG to an all-new region

The Lost Ark Abyssal Assault update has landed, bringing a new region to explore in the Amazon Games and Smilegate MMORPG. This latest overhaul whisks us away to a previously inaccessible continent in search of adventure, unleashes the third act of the Kazeros Raid, and heralds the return of the Arkesia Grand Prix event. As Amazon Games prepares to deliver some of its biggest changes to the multiplayer ARPG yet, in service of making Lost Ark more approachable and reducing its notorious grind, this update is set to deliver some of the endgame challenge that veterans have been craving.

The big highlight of this latest Lost Ark update is the introduction of new continent Rimeria. It’s been closed off for many years after its local tribe, the Yoz, managed to seal a rift created by an invading force of monsters known as the Pitch Black Night. Now, however, that great seal is starting to crack, threatening to unleash the nightmares once more. In order to help, we’re heading to the South Isle, where we’ll join Shandi, Zakra, and the Rimeria Elders. You’ll need to have reached item level 1640 in the free Steam game to make the journey, along with completing the ‘Paving the Way to Victory’ and ‘The Way Forward’ quests.

Launching on Wednesday June 4, two weeks after this update, is the third act of the Kazeros Raid. This eight-player series of encounters has been described as particularly challenging by the Korean audience that has already tackled it, so make sure you’re on top form. It’ll include both normal difficulty (item level 1680) and a hard mode (1700). Amazon Games has also been teasing the possibility of an even more punishing variant arriving in the future, so get your practice in now.

If you’re looking for something else to keep you busy in the meantime, the Arkesia Grand Prix is back and runs until Wednesday July 23, letting you earn coins through races, daily login bonuses, and weekly missions. These can then be exchanged for honing materials, utility items, and even some premium items such as legendary card packs. If you want to get even more fashionable, there’s a new ‘K-Pop Idol collection’ in Neria’s Wardrobe.

The Lost Ark Abyssal Assault update is live now, and you can play for free on Steam. Take a look through the patch notes courtesy of Amazon Games and Smilegate for all the additional tweaks and balance changes. Then, be sure to catch up on the team’s plans for the new Paradise mode that’s set to offer a dramatic new way to play, designed to be new-player friendly and accessible to all.

  • HoYoverse finally announces Honkai Star Rail x Fate release date with 5-star Archer and 5-star Saber – plus Archer is free

HoYoverse finally announces Honkai Star Rail x Fate release date with 5-star Archer and 5-star Saber – plus Archer is free

HoYoverse finally announced the Honkai Star Rail x Fate collaboration release date during the second HSR concert, including details about which characters will join the space game’s roster. HSR x Fate kicks off on July 11, 2025, in an event called Sweet Dreams and the Holy Grail, and it adds two new 5-star characters from the Fate series to HSR’s list of playable characters.

One of them is Saber, a 5-star Destruction character with wind as her element. Saber, aka Artoria Pendragon, is one of Fate’s main characters and first debuted in 2004’s Fate/Stay Night. Saber will run for the usual length of time in a limited event banner. The second Fate character in HSR is Archer, another long-time favorite. Archer is a 5-star Hunt character with quantum as his element, and anyone who logs into Honkai Star Rail during Sweet Dreams and the Holy Grail will get him for free.

HoYoverse said the free Archer giveaway will last through the end of Honkai Star Rail 3.6. Based on the game’s current update calendar, that’d be sometime in November 2025. Assuming the free Archer event is like the time HoYoverse gave Dr Ratio away, you’ll probably only need to be at the story’s beginning, at the point where you unlock the warp function.

Saber will have “exciting” interactions with the Trailblaze crew during the event’s associated story missions. Fate writer Kinoko Nasu penned the crossover event’s story, and artist Takashi Takeuchi created the Honkai Star Rail versions of Archer and Saber.

HoYoverse also teased a new Honkai game during the concert, though had no further information to share at the time.

If you’re just tuning in for Honkai Star Rail’s second anniversary, make sure to grab your free Ruan Mei or Luocha while the event lasts. Check out our HSR codes page for some freebies, too.

  • New Star Citizen free event is the perfect chance to play big MMO and space game

New Star Citizen free event is the perfect chance to play big MMO and space game

Star Citizen has taken on almost mythic proportions over the years. Its creator, eager to outdo the visions of outer space offered by games like Eve Online, No Man’s Sky, and Starfield, has been working on fleshing out a wildly ambitious MMO simulation for more than a decade now, even as other projects in its wheelhouse come and go. Given how long the game has been in active production, though, it can be hard for interested players to know when to give Star Citizen a shot. Luckily, there’s no better time than now, since a current ‘free fly’ event makes it easier than ever to give the game a look.

Star Citizen can be a bit daunting to approach, especially given how dense its take on the space game genre has become over time. The ideal way to dip into it is through one of its free trial events, which not only provide missions for new players to situate themselves in its sprawling world, but don’t cost anything to try.

The current free fly event allows anyone to check out Star Citizen by signing up for an account and downloading the game for free. After completing its introductory missions, players can sample some of the activities available in the massively multiplayer space sim, piloting a roster of six different ships or heading out on foot to explore the game’s far future setting. It’s a great opportunity for anyone curious to see what the space sim is all about, or to check in on how it’s been coming along over the many years it’s been available to the public.

Star Citizen’s current free event runs until next Monday April 28. You can sign up to take part in it at the official website right here.
