“Overwhelming demand” for League of Legends TCG Riftbound causes pre-order chaos

It’s safe to say that there’s a ravenous hunger for Riftbound, the League of Legends TCG that’s finally getting an English release this year. Pre-orders went live earlier today, August 4, and within minutes Riftbound appeared to sell out. Fans trying to secure decks and packs of its first set, Origins, also had to fight through checkout issues and crashes on Riot’s website. Now, the company has acknowledged the issues and says that it’ll be “keeping a close eye on market demand” to ensure it gets in players’ hands.

I remember when Riot first revealed Riftbound (then known simply as Project K) at the tail end of last year. At the time, it was a surprise to see Riot committing to transforming League of Legends into a Magic The Gathering-style card game, but on reflection, it feels like a natural fit. A huge treasure chest of characters, abilities, factions, and storylines to dive into, the world of Runeterra does make sense as a physical TCG.

The next big question, though, was whether LoL fans (or TCG enthusiasts aware of this universe through either Riot’s multiplayer games or the Arcane Netflix series) would gravitate towards it. Based on today’s events, I can confidently say that yes, they will.

For anyone with a Riot ID in good standing, pre-orders for Riftbound Origins went live today, and within minutes there were reports on social media of products being sold out, items being removed from baskets, checkout issues, and general website sluggishness. Within about 15 minutes of pre-orders opening, Riot had taken to X to tell fans that it was “working to resolve issues” with its online store.

Now, Riot has released a statement promising to improve its pre-order experience after it experienced “overwhelming demand” for Riftbound.

“We’re humbled by the support and enthusiasm for Riftbound: Origins so far ahead of the English release,” the statement reads. “Due to the overwhelming demand for our preorders, the store experienced extremely heavy traffic which resulted in loading or checkout errors for many of you. The team is looking into potential solutions to make future preorder experiences smoother. We’re also keeping a close eye on market demand for Riftbound and we’ll be working towards increasing supply to ensure that players have reasonable access to the product.”

League of Legends: A statement about Riftbound from Riot Games

Riftbound is slated to fully launch on Friday, October 31. Hopefully the process of getting some packs, booster boxes, or decks won’t be as scary as that date suggests.

  • League of Legends rival Supervive gets “top-to-bottom overhaul” as it hits 1.0

League of Legends rival Supervive gets “top-to-bottom overhaul” as it hits 1.0

For me, Supervive 1.0 is the most exciting MOBA launch in a decade. Not since I was blasting noobs with Ragnaros in Heroes of the Storm have I had the urge to play something within the genre outside of my ride or die, League of Legends. It’s frenetic, vibrant, and full of promise. Developer Theorycraft Games has just dropped a new trailer ahead of its launch tomor- wait, what’s that? We can play it right now?

Supervive 1.0 is a substantially different beast from what we’ve seen in one of the year’s best MOBA‘s open beta. In the recent global launch rundown, Theorycraft co-founder and CEO Joe Tung goes so far as to call it a “top-to-bottom overhaul of the game, with a ton of polish, new content, and new features.”

The biggest pain point Theorycraft has focused on is long-term engagement. While Supervive is one of the best new MOBAs I’ve played in a long time, not least because of its fast-paced combat and refreshing take on a tired genre. Regardless, I did drop off fairly quickly. The solution, according to Tung, is more depth, replayability, and variety.

This manifests in 1.0’s standout feature, the Armory. Now, killing players and taking objectives yields a new resource called Prisma. This can be spent in the Armory on various unlocks and upgrades throughout a season. Though there’s no pay-to-win to be seen here, I don’t find a grind-based system particularly appetizing, especially if it has in-game ramifications. I can see casuals quickly falling behind, which poses a significant risk to long-term attrition.

That being said, if Theorycraft can get the time investment required to reach your desired goals just right, then the studio’s onto a winner. You can check out Tung’s full explainer here.

Supervive was expected to land tomorrow, July 24, but the servers have now been switched on ahead of time. So what are you waiting for? Get going. You can check out Supervive on Steam, or peruse my soon-to-be-updated Supervive tier list for a few handy tips.

  • League of Legends hits pause on new skins to rework disappointing Black Rose set

League of Legends hits pause on new skins to rework disappointing Black Rose set

It’s update day in League of Legends, and while patch 25.10 is now live and the patch notes are out in the wild, it’s actually news about 25.11 that’s caught my attention. With 25.11 heading to the PBE, Riot has revealed that for the first time in a long while, there will be no new skins on the test server to uncover, and thus no new skins when the update drops later this month. The reason? Riot’s put most of its energy into reworking its underwhelming and controversial Masque of the Black Rose skin series.

The start of the year was a rough one for League of Legends, and one of several contributing factors was the fact that premium, high-cost skins were just not hitting the quality mark. One of the very first skin lines to drop in 2025, the Masque of the Black Rose set suffered from this mediocrity as well despite featuring in the battle pass, and Riot is now trying to make good with some extensive overhauls. Featuring Elise, Ezreal, Renata Glasc, Samira, Vladimir, and a Prestige Katarina, the splash arts for this set looked stunning. It also explored a really cool theme, with the Black Rose being a shady secret society in LoL’s universe.

However, when fans of the MOBA actually saw these skins on the Rift, it was a different story. There were criticisms of bland and basic designs that felt underwhelming given the money needed to acquire some of them and the expectations the splashes had set.

In 25.11, reworks for the skin line will arrive, and with the update now on the PBE you can check out the transformations for yourself. Masque of the Black Rose Elise, Renata, Samira, and Vladimir are the champion skins benefitting from enhanced visuals. The video below from SkinSpotlights is a brilliant before and after comparison.

However, the work needed to overhaul the Black Rose skins has come at a cost. “We hit pause on skins that would’ve normally dropped in this upcoming window so we could go back and give the Black Rose skins a little extra love; a mix of updates across models, textures, and VFX,” Riot reveals in the patch notes for today’s 25.10 update. So, that means that 25.11 will have no new skins to speak of. Wild.

It’s unclear from Riot’s use of the phrase “upcoming window” whether we may actually see more than one patch without new skins, but I’m assuming it’s just referring to 25.11 – we couldn’t see back-to-back skinless updates, could we? Getting just one is pretty unheard of.

LoL patch 25.11 should roll out on Wednesday, May 28 according to Riot’s update schedule.
