Minecraft challenger Hytale hangs in the balance as ex founder plans roadmap

Former Hypixel Studios co-founder Simon Collins-Laflamme doesn’t appear to have yet secured the rights to canceled Minecraft contender Hytale, which he sold along with the developer to Riot Games in 2020, but that hasn’t stopped him from making big plans for its return. In a recent flurry of posts to X, he lays out a potential roadmap, talks about hiring devs, and even suggests what his release model will look like, despite previously cautioning that any potential deal would be extremely unlikely.

Built by a studio born from one of the most popular Minecraft servers, Hytale was a promising contender to Minecraft’s crown. Unfortunately, its road to claim a place among our best sandbox games was stopped in its tracks when Hypixel Studios announced in June that Riot Games had called an end to development, and would be winding down the studio over the coming months. Shortly after that, Collins-Laflamme said he would “reach out” to the League of Legends and Valorant maker about picking the reins back up.

Despite cautioning that the chances of a successful return “are next to impossible,” Collins-Laflamme has continued to talk about the project in detail, with a particularly eager rush of conversations in the past day. Indeed, when asked “how things are moving along” in a #SaveHytale thread on X, he even responds, “I won’t say much as it could potentially hurt the process. Will share details the minute I can.”

While he’s not talking about the actual purchase discussions, Collins-Laflamme hasn’t been shy about laying out his potential plans, were he to get his hands back on the project. He emphasizes that he’d want to release something as soon as possible to raise funds. “It’s going to probably feel barebones day one but the exploration is going to be great. We would then spend many years improving the experience, of course.”

Hytale - Comments from former Hypixel Studios co-founder Simon Collins-Laflamme.

Having previously stated that he would be willing to invest up to $25 million towards development, Collins-Laflamme now adds, “I would probably need to burn one or two mil max before release, then have [the] income of the early access fund the development. If things get tough I can cover until it gets better between updates.” He suggests a lower-price entry version “for people who can’t afford or simply want to try it before upgrading,” along with the potential for supporter or founder packs for those looking to support at a higher tier.

As for the potential roadmap, Collins-Laflamme muses, “Survival and/or creative would be released first, just to get Hytale out ASAP. Minigames require a bit of infrastructure hardware work so it would take a bit of time. I don’t want to make people wait; [we’ve] got to break the release curse. Later on, [an] adventure (story) mode, this would have a more complete ‘survival’ loop with more content.”

Hytale - Comments from former Hypixel Studios co-founder Simon Collins-Laflamme.

Speaking about proximity-based voice chat, he also notes, “Today I had a chat with one of my developers that used to work on Hytale and he thinks it’s possible to add it (back) in. I will personally make sure it happens, especially in time for minigames, this could be hilarious and chaotic, love it. Opens the door for new minigame genres as well.” Collins-Laflamme then pauses briefly before restating, “If I get to buy the IP of course!”

It’s certainly a lot of hypothesizing for a deal that may still not happen, but it’s at least clear that Collins-Laflamme is serious about delivering the project he helped to create. He says he will “do my best to add a clause in a letter of intent that I can say publicly [that] something is being negotiated, so I can start actively hiring before the deal closes.” For now, we’ll just have to wait and see how the situation develops, but I’d certainly love this to become a surprise success story.

  • Minecraft is giving away a pack of five Superman themed skins for free

Minecraft is giving away a pack of five Superman themed skins for free

While you can painstakingly recreate your favorite videogame, comic, or movie character yourself in Minecraft, sometimes you just want the convenience of grabbing a skin pack from the marketplace. If you’re lucky, you may even find some freebies, and in celebration of the new Superman movie, Minecraft has just released yet another free skin pack for you to take advantage of. Containing five skins depicting core characters from the movie, including Superman himself, it’s available to grab right now.

With iconic Warhammer 40k player – I mean, actor – Henry Cavill stepping away from the Superman suit, it’s time for David Corenswet to take up the mantle. Releasing this weekend, the new Superman movie will, ironically, be going toe to toe with A Minecraft Movie to be one of this year’s biggest new releases. Despite the competition, Mojang is down to celebrate the return of Superman on the big screen with some new Minecraft skins.

Conveniently called the ‘Superman Skin Pack,’ it contains incredibly detailed skins for Superman, Lois Lane, Mister Terrific, Hawkgirl, and the Green Lantern, with the designs based on their appearance in the new film. Put together by the prolific team at Oreville Studios, the titular hero himself is definitely the highlight, but if you’re a particular fan of these other DC characters then you’re in for a treat as well.

The Superman Skin Pack is available to claim for free from the Minecraft marketplace right now. Head here if you want to grab it.

It sounds like this is just the beginning for Mojang’s support of the Superman movie. “Stay tuned for the Superman DLC coming soon!” the developer teases in an announcement post. While this will likely involve splurging some Minecoins, rather than getting everything for free, this will no doubt be of interest to all you DC fans out there.

This is all coming off the back of a rather momentous occasion for Minecraft – the debut of copper golems. Once a Mob Vote loser, these cute little bots are now one of the most helpful additions the game has seen to date. Plus, copper is now a gear tier for armor, tools, and weapons, giving newer players more options when it comes to enhancing their items.

  • This cryptic Minecraft teaser could be hinting at a big material update

This cryptic Minecraft teaser could be hinting at a big material update

Minecraft developer Mojang loves to keep players guessing when it comes to new updates, innovations, and content. Sure, we’ll eventually get a set of patch notes, a blog post, or a trailer revealing all, but it often throws some breadcrumbs around first. It seems to be at it again, because a cryptic new teaser on Minecraft’s Instagram page has left fans scratching their heads and cooking up some pretty wild theories – however, some science-savvy sleuths appear to have found a connection: copper.

It’s been a busy old month for Minecraft updates and content drops already, with Vibrant Visuals certainly the highlight. Already a mainstay on our best PC games of all time list, Minecraft is now more beautiful than ever thanks to this visual overhaul. However, Mojang is wasting no time teasing what’s next, and there are plenty of educated guesses (and complete stabs in the dark) emerging though.

In a new post on the official Minecraft Instagram account, Mojang shows a humble cave scene. But look a little closer, and you’ll see the letters ‘C’ and ‘U’ carved into the wall, and the numbers ‘2’ and ‘9’ on the floor. As well as these visual clues, a notification can also be seen saying: “Teleported Steve to 29, 11, 63.54.” The caption of the post also ties into this, simply reading: “/tp.”

    YouTube Thumbnail

That’s a weird collection of clues, right? So let’s dive into some of the theories. First, a couple that I think you can disregard, due to them using only some of the available information. For anyone saying that ’29, 11′ is pointing to some kind of major update on November 29, I’d think again – that’s a long old time away. I also don’t believe those thinking that ‘C,’ ‘U,’ and ‘2’ mean that Caves Update 2 is on the way – the original Caves and Cliffs update, which came in two parts, rolled out during 2021. To the Minecraft fan claiming that ‘C U 2 9’ sounds like ‘see you tonight’ and was hopeful some huge news the same day, better luck next time. And finally, if you thought the ‘2’ was some kind of hint that Minecraft 2 might be announced on November 29, don’t get your hopes up.

However, there’s one extremely solid (and extremely nerdy) theory that I think is bang on the money. From what I can see, this was first stated as part of a joint effort in the Instagram comments by ‘meowze_x’ and ‘charles__75,’ and they predict that this is all to do with some kind of update to copper.

I know you don’t come to read this article for a science lesson, but bear with me. In the periodic table of elements, copper is represented by the symbol Cu. Its atomic number is 29, and it’s found in group 11 of the periodic table. Oh, and guess what copper’s atomic mass is: 63.546. So, that all ties in to the visual clues in the cave and the coordinates that Steve has been teleported to. We have a winner.

Exactly what Mojang plans to do with copper is the next mystery. Maybe there will be new uses for copper as a material, or new items that you can craft out of it. Another theory is that the Copper Golem – a mob that lost in the final of the 2021 community mob vote and has become something of a niche Minecraft meme – could be added to the game. At this stage, we just don’t know, but it’s almost certainly something copper-related.

We’ll of course keep you in the loop when Mojang finally confirms what it’s up to. In the meantime, check out our guides to the best Minecraft seeds and best Minecraft mods.

  • Lead Minecraft developer finally reveals the secret behind iconic squid milk bug

Lead Minecraft developer finally reveals the secret behind iconic squid milk bug

As of right now, all seems well in Minecraft world. Minecraft Live was a blast, the most recent Snapshots have introduced improvements to both long-range combat and to leashes, and the Minecraft movie is an enormous success. But like any and every videogame, Mojang’s blocky builder has experienced its share of technical troubles. Veterans might recall the dancing Enderdragon. In fact, Minecraft’s most iconic enemy, the Creeper, is the result of a glitch that twisted and elongated the original character model for pigs. Now, Jens Bergensten, Mojang’s chief creative officer, explains the history of one of the best Minecraft bugs. Who here remembers squid milk?

With 2025 seemingly as busy as ever for Mojang’s building game, make sure you’re up to speed with the best Minecraft seeds and also the best Minecraft mods. Once you’ve found a new world and gotten settled, see if you can find yourself a friendly squid. Hopefully, you will notice two things: one, the squid is swimming in the water and two, no matter how hard you try, you cannot milk it, like a cow. As one of Minecraft‘s most legendary developers explains, this wasn’t always the case.

“When I started working on Minecraft, I didn’t really know exactly how everything worked,” Bergensten, who has co-developed Minecraft since 2010, explains. “I wanted to add a new mob, so I added a squid. The best way for me to do that was to copy an existing mob, so I based the squid on the cow mob, but I forgot to remove the milking behavior.

“For a while, you could actually milk the squid, which was a bit silly and also… not the intended behavior. Again, the squid was my first mob, so I managed to add more problems to it. In the way I made the movement code, the server and client wouldn’t agree on where the squid actually was. This caused a behavior where you would occasionally see squids flying around in the air, the ‘flying squid’ bug.”

Squid milking (what a wonderful combination of words) was removed from Minecraft in 2011. Maybe, though, it could make a return. I’m not saying you should be able to get cow’s milk from squids, but maybe black dye? Either way, I will agree that squids should remain in the water and not the sky.

In other Minecraft news, check out the details from the latest Snapshot, and also this in-development mod that, in theory, will let you play with 100,000 people on a single world.

  • New automation sandbox game Icaria fuses Minecraft and Factorio together

New automation sandbox game Icaria fuses Minecraft and Factorio together

Back in the early heyday of Minecraft, what really kept me coming back were the mods that dramatically opened up the sandbox game’s building potential. Tekkit, and later Feed the Beast, introduced me to a world of pipe networks and automation long before I ever got into the likes of Satisfactory and Factorio. Now, new indie game Icaria combines the iconic blocky look of Minecraft with the ability to lay out intricate factory networks and program helpers to handle all your tasks, and it’s out now on Steam with a playable demo.

Much like Minecraft, starting a new game of Icaria drops you into a small section of a procedurally generated alien world, although developer Blindsight Games’ creations are more alien in nature than those of Mojang. From your initial spawn, you’ll gradually explore outwards, building out a radio network to give you a better perspective of the world around you.

Like all the best sandbox games, you must gather materials to start constructing, upgrading, and expanding your base, but your labor is just the beginning. Described by Blindsight as a “single-player colony builder,” Icaria really comes into its own as you learn to automate your factories and program robotic helpers. Anything you can do yourself can also be accomplished by your workers, and the bigger your base grows, the more important that becomes.

    YouTube Thumbnail

Using a clean set of visual tools to make programming approachable to anyone, and ways to quickly share your scripts with other players, you’ll be able to set up your workers and facilities to act exactly how you wish. Terraform the landscape, lay down power networks, assign trucks to transport materials across your ever-expanding colony, and unlock more ways to engage with the world.

Icaria is out now on Steam in early access, with a 15% launch discount meaning you’ll pay $21.24 / £17.84 if you buy it by Monday May 12. There’s also a free demo you can download and try before you commit. Blindsight Games is aiming for the early access period to last for “around a year,” but says it will extend that “if that seems like the best way to deliver a satisfying and complete game.”
