  • Turing Machine: Useful verifier than only results in False?

Are there any setups by the Turing Machine manufacturer that we know of that use the fact that a verifier is required to complete the code BUT the verifier also does not ever produce a true for the given code? Example below:

    For b = blue, y = yellow and p = purple you could have:

    1. b = 2
    2. y = 3
    3. p = 3

You could also have the verifiers:

    1. v1 = one colour is less than the other two
    2. v2 = yellow is =/>/< 3
    3. v3 = there are x even numbers
    4. v4 = one colour is greater than the other two

Using that you can get the following results from the verifiers (eventually):

    1. v1: blue is < yellow or purple
    2. v2: yellow = 3
    3. v3: there is 1 even number
    4. v4: all results are negative

In this case BECAUSE all results on v4 are negative, the code is solvable and is b2 y3 p3

    IF v4 had a positive for p > b/y then the result would also be meaningful: b2 y3 p5

Therefore in this case v4 is both: required for the solution AND provides only negative results for this code

I’m interested in whether the game setup provided by the manufacturer uses this feature to allow for such games. It seems ‘legal’ within the game rules, but it’s not clear whether these cases are actually provided and I can imagine that for ‘ease of understanding/play’ they might have shied away from those setups.

It’s relevant because knowing whether they are possible setups or not affects your number of guesses. If it’s not possible, then you can assume the above case HAS TO BE the p5 solution and do (potentially) at least one less guess of the verifiers

  • Is it possible to score higher than 92 in Boggle using only US state names? [closed]

Given a 5 X 5 Boggle grid, is it possible to score higher than 92 points using only US state names ("District of Columbia" is not included)? No spaces are used, so North Carolina becomes NORTHCAROLINA, and no double-counting of letters is allowed (for example, for HAWAII, cannot double-tap on "I" in a single grid space.) It is known that the following 5 x 5 arrangement of letters yields 92 points (there is a rumor a 105-point solution was found, but it is not available):

    SUTHC
    NORAD
    AILKS
    STONA
    IUMWT

In summary, the state names found (and points) are represented in shorthand by the following USPS two-letter mnemonics:
NC-13, SC-13, ND-11, SD-11, LA-9, AR-8, MT-7, AK-6, KS-6, IA-4, UT-4 when spelled out they give a total of 92 points. The "UIS" in the lower left corner was used to capture LOUISIANA, but could conceivably be improved upon.

It has been suggested that the counts of occurrences of letters in state names might be useful:

    A 63
    I 45
    N 43
    O 36
    S 34
    E 29
    R 22
    T 19
    L 17
    H 16
    M 15
    C 13
    D 11
    W 11
    K 10
    G 9
    U 8
    Y 6
    V 5
    P 4
    B 2
    F 2
    X 2
    J 1
    Z 1
    Q 0

  • If I double (takeout) after the opponents have bid two different suits, does the takeeout apply to "both" bids or only the most recent one?

My left hand opponent dealt and bid one diamond. Partner passed. My right hand opponent bid one spade. I wanted to double one diamond, but not one spade, with the following hand: ♠KQT5 ♡K92 ♢2 ♣ KT653.

So I passed. Left hand opponent rebid two diamonds. Partner and right hand opponent passed. Now I doubled, because the last opposing bid was diamonds.

Partner’s distribution was 4-3-4-2, with xxx in hearts and Qx in clubs. She passed because she had four cards each and her remaining seven honor points in suits bid by the opponents, and she thought she was "playing defense." She didn’t want to bid one of her short "round" suits (clubs or hearts)to take out my double.

I told her, "I had four spades to support a spade bid, and a only a singleton diamond opposite your four diamonds. We were not strong enough to defend, but we were strong enough to play two spades" (RHO opponent had five little ones for his bid).

Partner thought that my double showed shortness in both the opponents suits. I say that my bidding pattern showed shortness only in diamonds and suggested strength in spades. Are either of these interpretations more nearly correct than the other? Or do some world class partnerships use one, and some the other?

  • How could you best run a limited event with only random bulk?

I have over 2k of bulk cards that are a hassle to store. I’ve heard that I could donate them, but these cards are in English and where I live most kids/teens don’t speak the language. I’ve heard to sell them for like 10 bucks on eBay, but that just seems like a waste.

Instead I wonder if there isn’t a more fun and creative way to get rid of them. I want to run a limited event in which my friends can just make a fun deck and bring the cards home. If you were going to run such an event, how would you do it?

Here is what I’ve considered so far:

    1. My first thought was to make a cube, but there are too many cards to sort, enter into some collection app and then to find a way to create a cube. It would be a nightmare.
    2. My second idea was to do a draft, where we shuffle everything and make packs out of the cards(maybe bigger packs than 15 to make up for the randomness), but I just ran a draft in which people got 4 packs, and my friends complained it is hard to parse a strategy when you have that many cards.
    3. My last idea was to do a big sealed draw. Basically put all the cards into a bag and you draw the equivalent of 6 packs(90 cards) and then you have to make a deck. I think this helps with the problem of parsing all of the cards, because you should be able to pile them by colour and not consider a good part of them, but then you are still left with a lot of useless bulk in a way that draft kinda solves.

For all of these ideas I’m also afraid it will he very difficult to make a strategy coalesce.

Did anyone try to do something like this before? If so, what do you suggest?

Here is my current idea for how to run the event. I will keep it up to date as your answers and comments help me refine it:

    1. Ask all my friends to bring their own trash bulk they don’t want(so this event will also work as a sort of exchange)
    2. Sort all the cards into a single mythics/rares land/color fixers and chase/signpost pile, the rest get sorted by color
    3. Randomize all the cards in each pile and deal a certain number for each player(not sure how many yet)
    4. Do a mythics/rare draft to start with, to help players find a strategy
    5. All players get to choose 2 colors and get the equivalent of two boosters for each
    6. Do a second mythic/rare draft to refine the strategy
    7. Do a second "sealed" pick where you choose 2 colors again and get two sealed packs
    8. At the end the players will have the equivalent of 6 packs and some good control over what they got
