Is bidding in contract bridge just a matter of applying a set of rules?

It’s hard to appreciate Bridge fully until you’ve play it! But, to try in plain language:

The bidding-phase is far from a simple a rule-based exchange. It’s a territorial war in prelude to ‘the actual battle’. Tactically, A rich side with want to occupy bid-space to share information, while a poor side want to render space unuseable to neutralise opponent’s advantage or put them on the wrong ‘battlefield’. Also, players must first identify who are the richer and poorer sides, when the initial distribution of assets is unknown!

Exchanging information with partner is a high priority, but one isn’t obliged to bid when it reveals more to opponents than partner. Mild bluff and deceipt are also embraced, however within prescribed limits to prevent the game becoming simple poker. This all requires considerable judgement and skill with bidding rules that are statistically accurate though individually inaccurate.

Limiting bid-exchange to two-word ‘bytes’ of information achieves two goals: (a) The first-player advantage gets evened out so each player receives a meaningful turn, and (b) The small vocabulary constrains exchange to a kind of statistical ‘meta-data’, that helps keep much of the granular information concealed until the playing phase.

Moreover, for today’s game skillfull bidding is listening to what is NOT said, like Sherlock Holmes ‘dog that did not bark in the night!’ Skilled players ‘read’ the one spoken bid as a clever denial of 5 ‘unspoken’ bids, thus exchanging 5 times more data through one bid. And, advanced bidding systems increase this ratio, giving greater band-width to the players astute enough to decode it!

This all creates immense depth in the bidding, and why it’s quite difficult to master. Meanwhile the asymmetric distribution of information rewards teamwork whilst ‘keeping the murderer’s identity hidden until the last card’ in this ingenious game.

  • The rest of July is awesome for Game Pass with huge titles including Grounded 2 set to arrive – here’s what’s coming your way

The rest of July is awesome for Game Pass with huge titles including Grounded 2 set to arrive – here’s what’s coming your way

    Grounded 2

If you are a Game Pass subscriber, you’d better start clearing your calendars and storage space for the next few weeks, as Microsoft has dropped a list of games that you are not going to have time to play, all of which are arriving before the end of the month.

As ever, some are going to get your attention more than most, and we will give you the full list in a moment, but first let’s cherry-pick some of what has caught our eye.

    Grounded 2

Grounded was a really great game. Its setting, writing, and gameplay all appealed deeply to gamers like us who grew up watching movies where kids got shrunk and put into mild peril. Movies such as Inner Space and Big were staples of our entertainment, and Grounded took us back to a time when that all seemed possible.

Grounded also became a little infamous for being one of the first games to cross the Xbox exclusive divide and enter the enemy camps of Nintendo and PlayStation.

Grounded 2‘s Day One release will follow a similar path, being available only on Xbox and PC at launch.

It’s going to be very cool, and we can’t wait to play this one.

    RoboCop: Rogue City

Not new by any means, and with standalone DLC on the horizon as well, RoboCop: Rogue City caught everybody by surprise by being great, and also doing a fantastic job of recreating one of our favorite 80s movies. With appearances by original actors and a game that didn’t fall into the trap of just making another twitch shooter, RRC was really fun, and finding a new audience on Game Pass is its deserved reward.

    Farming Simulator 25

Giants Software can do little wrong when it comes to Farming Simulator. Its audience is nailed on, and the size of it is mindblowing. Now, after healthy sales, it is obviously deemed the right time to spread the word further, so get your crops sown before the winter sets in and relax to the sounds of your combine harvester.

Games coming to Game Pass in July’s Wave 2

Outside of those three, we have the return of the excellent High on Life, which was a Day One game back in the day before leaving the service. That’s back from today, and we also have new Souls-like, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, which looks beautiful but challenging.

Here’s the full list of what to expect between now and the end of the month.

  • League of Legends hits pause on new skins to rework disappointing Black Rose set

League of Legends hits pause on new skins to rework disappointing Black Rose set

It’s update day in League of Legends, and while patch 25.10 is now live and the patch notes are out in the wild, it’s actually news about 25.11 that’s caught my attention. With 25.11 heading to the PBE, Riot has revealed that for the first time in a long while, there will be no new skins on the test server to uncover, and thus no new skins when the update drops later this month. The reason? Riot’s put most of its energy into reworking its underwhelming and controversial Masque of the Black Rose skin series.

The start of the year was a rough one for League of Legends, and one of several contributing factors was the fact that premium, high-cost skins were just not hitting the quality mark. One of the very first skin lines to drop in 2025, the Masque of the Black Rose set suffered from this mediocrity as well despite featuring in the battle pass, and Riot is now trying to make good with some extensive overhauls. Featuring Elise, Ezreal, Renata Glasc, Samira, Vladimir, and a Prestige Katarina, the splash arts for this set looked stunning. It also explored a really cool theme, with the Black Rose being a shady secret society in LoL’s universe.

However, when fans of the MOBA actually saw these skins on the Rift, it was a different story. There were criticisms of bland and basic designs that felt underwhelming given the money needed to acquire some of them and the expectations the splashes had set.

In 25.11, reworks for the skin line will arrive, and with the update now on the PBE you can check out the transformations for yourself. Masque of the Black Rose Elise, Renata, Samira, and Vladimir are the champion skins benefitting from enhanced visuals. The video below from SkinSpotlights is a brilliant before and after comparison.

However, the work needed to overhaul the Black Rose skins has come at a cost. “We hit pause on skins that would’ve normally dropped in this upcoming window so we could go back and give the Black Rose skins a little extra love; a mix of updates across models, textures, and VFX,” Riot reveals in the patch notes for today’s 25.10 update. So, that means that 25.11 will have no new skins to speak of. Wild.

It’s unclear from Riot’s use of the phrase “upcoming window” whether we may actually see more than one patch without new skins, but I’m assuming it’s just referring to 25.11 – we couldn’t see back-to-back skinless updates, could we? Getting just one is pretty unheard of.

LoL patch 25.11 should roll out on Wednesday, May 28 according to Riot’s update schedule.
