    A new, free version of Rust has been revealed, but there’s a catch


    Take a glance at Steam’s top ten most-played games on any given day, and there are a few names you’re almost guaranteed to see. Dota 2. Counter-Strike 2. PUBG. They’re all consistent big hitters. So too is Rust, arguably Steam’s biggest survival game, and a brand new version of Facepunch’s legendary game has just been fully revealed. Unfortunately for those on PC, this is not ‘Rust 2’ – it’s Rust Mobile.

    We already knew that a mobile version of Rust was in development, but now it’s been fully unveiled to those who want to build and blow up bases on the go. It’s being developed by Level Infinite, the division of Tencent that’s also published the mobile version of PUBG and will help deliver the Assassin’s Creed Jade mobile spinoff as well. It’s promising to be a fully-fledged Rust experience – it’s fully licensed by Facepunch, and is retaining all of the hallmarks that make the original one of the best survival games ever made.

    “Rust Mobile brings everything you love from the PC version: open-world exploration, tense PvP battles, base building, and that constant feeling of ‘trust no one,’” Level Infinite says in an announcement post. “It’s all here, now tailored for a mobile lifestyle. The game features a fully explorable sandbox world with dynamic weather, region-based biomes, and a real-time day-night cycle. All the core pillars of Rust remain intact – scavenging, crafting, raiding, and permadeath – so every decision counts.”

    While details on monetization are limited at the moment, what I can tell you (after reaching out for clarification) is that Rust Mobile will be free-to-play. If it’s offering all the same thrills of the PC version, which has a retail price of $39.99 / $34.99, then great. But of course, there’s always the threat with free mobile games that there could be some time-gating and a heavy push towards microtransactions. Like I said, there’s nothing officially confirmed on that front yet, but just keep that in mind.

    As the Battlefield 6 classes split opinion, EA has “seen the suggestions”


    There’s a lot riding on Battlefield 6. After the messy launch of BF2042, EA is putting an extraordinary amount of time and effort into the sequel, clearly hoping it’ll be the biggest entry in the series yet. That’s why the studio is working with players every step of the way, testing and tweaking systems based on feedback well before any major official reveal. Recently, though, we learned about the game’s classes system, and the community was far from impressed. Now, EA has addressed those concerns while diving into even more detail on how the roles will work.

    EA caught a lot of flak for Battlefield 2042 when it launched, and one major reason for this was the game’s Specialist system. This mechanic completely annihilated the series’ traditional classes, turning them into a hero shooter-inspired mess that the community quickly rallied against. The reaction got so bad, in fact, that EA folded Specialists back into classes and promised they wouldn’t be coming back, ever. Despite that, however, the community isn’t entirely pleased with the direction Battlefield 6 is going.

    As of right now, the upcoming shooter’s class system is split into two halves: class-defining and customizable. Class-defining aspects are signature weapons, gadgets, and traits that give you distinct bonuses, acting as a reason for you to play within your role. If you choose the Recon class, for example, sniper scope sway will be decreased and your ability to stabilize your aim will be improved, encouraging you to use the weapon. Will this make for one of the best FPS games, though? Only time will tell.

    As for the customizable side, this means you can use absolutely any weapon you want with any class. When EA revealed this system earlier this year, however, it didn’t go down well. A large portion of the community want to go back to class-locked weapons and gadgets with the Battlefield 6 release date, to make each role feel truly distinct.

    In its newest blog, EA recognizes the complaints around classes, but doesn’t commit to changing the system. “We have seen the suggestions to revert to previous systems and/or closed weapons. We are keeping these in mind in our discussions as we aim to connect new and veteran players to the Battlefield experience, fostering teamwork and creating a universal understanding of our systems for the future,” EA writes.

    “We’ve collected extensive player feedback and data to improve the next Battlefield, particularly around classes. Some improvements happen quickly through Battlefield Labs testing, with balancing done via server-side commands. Other changes require new tools or client-side updates that take longer.”

    This was also followed up by the global senior director of integrated comms for Battlefield Studios, Andy McNamara, who assures the community that the team is hearing their concerns. “Just a friendly reminder, BF Labs is the place where we work on ideas, test and learn, and collect important data from our players. We love hearing and working with our players, and I promise you we hear everything. Can’t wait to share with you the culmination of this work at [a] reveal later this summer.”

    Battlefield 6 class response

    As mentioned by McNamara, EA has been using Battlefield Labs to bring the community into the newest game’s development process. This initiative recruits long-time players to test out specific focus areas of the game, which EA then takes action on.     The reboot of classic stealth game Perfect Dark has been scrapped


    One of the most beloved stealth shooters of the 2000s, Rare’s Perfect Dark is still remembered fondly to this day. For years, we’ve been patiently waiting for its ambitious reboot to arrive – a tumultuous development cycle means it’s been a long time coming. Last year, we finally got to see gameplay of the new Perfect Dark, and it looked absolutely stunning. However, as part of today’s devastating round of layoffs at Microsoft, which impacts several teams under the Xbox Game Studios banner, the project has been canceled. It also means that The Initiative, the internal studio formed by Xbox to create the Perfect Dark reboot, has been shut down completely.

    After watching its gameplay reveal during last year’s Xbox showcase, I genuinely believed that the new Perfect Dark could one day end up on our best stealth games list. Even though the 2000 original was a bit before my time, the reboot’s blend of stealth, urban traversal, and immersive sim elements seemed right up my street. The gunplay also looked excellent, and anything with slow motion bullet time gets a thumbs up from me. Sadly, you and I will never get the chance to play it.

    As news of the Xbox layoffs spread throughout the day, Perfect Dark was being touted as one of the projects at risk alongside Rare’s Everwild and an unannounced new IP from the creators of The Elder Scrolls Online.

    In a statement sent to employees by Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, these rumors have been confirmed. Not only is Perfect Dark canceled, but The Initiative is also shutting its doors for good.

    “We have made the decision to stop development of Perfect Dark and Everwild as well as wind down several unannounced projects across our portfolio,” Booty writes in the statement, which was obtained by Windows Central. “As part of this, we are closing one of our studios, The Initiative. These decisions, along with other changes across our teams, reflect a broader effort to adjust priorities and focus resources to set up our teams for greater success within a changing industry landscape. We did not make these choices lightly, as each project and team represent years of effort, imagination, and commitment.”

    The Initiative was spun up in 2018, with Perfect Dark being its first and only project. The studio was also being assisted by Tomb Raider trilogy developer Crystal Dynamics.

    Perfect Dark is one of several major upcoming PC games that have been scrapped this year already. Monolith suffered a similar fate to The Initiative, with its Wonder Woman game getting axed and the studio shut down. A co-op Transformers game from the folks at Splash Damage has also been canceled, and so too has promising platformer Earthblade from the studio that made Celeste.

    Practically a modern classic, Vampire Survivors has inspired countless imitators. But the upcoming Skull Horde actually looks like a novel take on its roguelike inspiration. While in Vampire Survivors you gain new abilities to upgrade your avatar, in Skull Horde you’ll build a massive army of fellow skeletons and lead them to victory through a dank dungeon. The game has an earnest and goofy tone, like a Tales from the Crypt episode that hits just right. You can give the game a try right now.

    As for how Skull Horde plays, each run will start in a new procedurally generated dungeon and you’ll control your army’s route through that dungeon. However, much like Vampire Survivors, you won’t control how your army acts and moves. Instead, you’ll select upgrades, purchase units, and pick up loot to improve your forces. You can also unlock perks that you’ll select at the beginning of the run, giving you powerful abilities and shaping your strategy for that run. But Skull Horde has some subtleties too. Staying longer on any floor of a dungeon can help you find more loot and money, but your enemies also grow more powerful.

    However, what makes Skull Horde really sing is its aesthetics. Its pixel sprites are detailed, but also readable at a glance. Watching armies of bone battle armies of flesh has the same aesthetic appeal as any of the best RTS games. A crunchy, guitar-heavy soundtrack completes the vibe.

    I was looking at Contingency Plan and found the effect surprisingly similar to the keyword Surveil. To compare, first the wording of Contingency Plan and then the wording of the Surveil keyword:

    Look at the top five cards of your library. Put any number of them into your graveyard and the rest back on top of your library in any order.

    And

    701.41a To “surveil N” means to look at the top N cards of your library, then put any number of them into your graveyard and the rest on top of your library in any order.

    They quite clearly are the same, so can I assume the card states “Surveil 5” instead? And if so, does it trigger abilities which state “Whenever you surveil …”?

    Frostpunk 2 is easily one of the best city-building games on PC. The long-awaited sequel to 11 Bit Studios’ 2018 hit survival game Frostpunk, Frostpunk 2 tasks you with developing and expanding the city of New London following an apocalyptic blizzard that has killed most of Earth’s population and left survivors in a never-ending winter.     You now have a council to appease (or ignore), which consists of faction delegates who each have their own view on how to run the city. So, rather than simply passing laws as you please, each law must be proposed and voted on by the council before it can be enacted. Keeping all the factions happy is nearly impossible, so it’s up to you to balance their varying wishes, your morals, and what you think is best for your people.

    The addition of the council gives this strategy game more political focus than its predecessor and makes the already difficult choices you’re regularly presented with even tougher. In PCGamesN’s Frostpunk 2 review, Reid McCarter said Frostpunk 2 is “a game that stands out in the strategy genre for the narrative consideration that gives every one of its choices so much texture.”

    If you’re up to the challenge, you’re in luck, as Frostpunk 2 is now at its lowest price yet. Fanatical has slashed 45% off the Standard Edition of Frostpunk 2, dropping the price from $44.99 / £37.99 to just $24.74 / £20.89.

    Yep, an Oblivion Remastered modder has done the thing all of us have secretly wanted for years. They’ve stuck a penthouse at the summit of the Imperial City’s White-Gold Tower, so you can live far above the potato-faced NPC masses and take in the views like a Cyrodiilic and pre-computer version of New Vegas‘ Mr House.

    As player home mods go, it’s possibly the least subtle bit of design placement I’ve ever seen, but let’s face it, you didn’t splash out for an remaster with gorgeous UE5 visuals not to be able to take in a stunning panorama of central Cyrodiil from your character’s digs.

    The modder behind this goes by RBDinteractive, and their ‘Champion Penthouse‘ is designed to finally deliver a reward for ending the Oblivion Crisis and saving the entire world that isn’t just some admittedly cool armour you might not even end up using.

    The concept’s very similar to a classic Oblivion mod – Vince Bly’s ‘Top of the World‘. Based on the fact RBDinteractive’s credited the fix and port script for OG Oblivion mods that modder Haphestia (whom we’ve recently interviewed about Oblivion Remastered modding) has developed for the remaster, it looks like there’s even a chance one could be loosely based on the other.

    Though, there are plenty of differences, with Top of the World’s square wooden room atop the tower could seemingly only be fast-travelled to, while the Champion Penthouse is a rounded stone suite that slightly more closely matches the design of the tower itself, and can be gotten to via a ladder found to the right when you enter at ground level.

    The furnishings and architecture are different, but the view’s the same breathtaking one that’s prompted both modders to decide to perch a house that’s open to Cyrodiil’s wider worldspace here, so you can take in the views from any angle in all their glory.

    It’s worth noting that as for right now the Champion’s Penthouse is accessible at any time for free, since it’s free and there’s no quest attached, but RBDinteractive’s suggested that might change soon. “I’m gonna try to learn how to edit quests and [have] homes be purchased,” they wrote in the mod’s comments section, “I’ll let you know if I get it working. My idea would be to get the penthouse when you beat the main quest, because everyone refers to you as Champion.”

    So, there you go. A house ideal for those who love nice views, and the literal worst nightmare of those who’re afraid of heights. Hey, you’ve fought your way through legions of Daedra pouring out of a not-quite-hell, surely you can handle the terror of knowing you might plummet to your death if you sleepwalk ten feet.

    Of course, it does come after the game’s release was delayed last week. After all the speculation it might be pushed back and Rockstar sticking to that vague Fall release window for ages, GTA 6‘ll be dropping on May 26, 2026.
